PARTY OF ENGLISH,
WHO made this amufement a fubftitute
WHICH the disturbed fituation of the country
IN THE ΜΟΝΤΗ OF FEBRUARY
THE DESERTED VILLAGE.
SWEET AUBURN! lovelieft village of the plain,
And parting fummer's ling'ring blooms delay'd.
Seats of my youth, when ev'ry fport could please,
Where humble happiness endear'd each scene!
The shelter'd cot, the cultivated farm,
The never-failing brook, the busy mill,
The decent church, that top't the neighb'ring hill,
How often have I bleft the coming day,
And all the village train, from labour free,
Succeeding sports the mirthful band inspir'd,
The dancing pair that simply fought renown,
By holding out to tire each other down;
The matron's glance that would those looks reprove,
One only mafter grafps the whole domain,
The hollow-founding bittern guards its nest;
