with the Dutchess of Buckingham, &c. difguifed themfelves like "coun. try laffes, in red petticoats, waistcoats, &c." and went to a fair, near Audley End; but over doing their parts, the people flocked about them, and the Queen at laft was known.

After the death of Charles II. the refided at Somerfet House till 1692, when the returned to Portugal, and died at Lifbon, 1705.

The Lady Longueville defcribes her as a "little woman, fo fhort legged, that when the ftood upon her feet, you would have thought the was on her knees; and yet fo long waifted, that when fhe fat down, fhe appeared a well fized woman.

JAMES, Duke of Monmouth,

Natural fon of Charles II. by Lucy, (called Mrs. Barlow) daughter of Richard Walters, Efq. was born at Rotterdam, 1649. When about two years of age, the King (juft before he went to Scotland) gave Lord Craven charge to take him from his mother, which he did, for which fhe went to law with him, and recovered her fon back; and afterwards they coming into England, were committed to the Tower, and not releafed till Cromwell ordered it, 1656. After this, it appears he was educated at Paris by the name of Croft, under the particular direction of the Queen Mother; who, when the came to England, (after the reftoration) brought him with her, when the King publicly owned him as his fon; and on his marriage with Anne, (fole heir of the Earl of Buccleugh) changed his name to Scot, that of his wife's. He was created Duke of Monmouth 1663, made a Knight of the Garter, and in 1665 Mafter of the Horfe. He was made Captain General of the King's forces, 1668; two years after, one of the Privy Council; in 1673 a Lieutenant General by the French King; and next year chofen Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

His accumulated wealth, honour, and univerfal popularity, could not fatisfy him; he afpired to the Throne itself, and at length his ambition brought him to the block, 1685. He was a man of courage, "underftood war well, and was both fincere and good-natured."

GEORGE VILLIERS, Duke of Buckingham,

Eldeft fon of the favourite Buckingham, killed by Felton, was born 1627, brought up with Charles I. children, and further educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, until he went on his travels; when, on his return, though under age (the civil war having commenced) he entered into the King's fervice, and was at the ftorming of the Close at Litchfield. He afterwards (1648) was one of thofe Noblemen who made an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the King; and would have been taken prifoner, the house he went to afterwards being furrounded; but he and
