Not thofe indited by his first command,

A prophet grav'd the text, an angel held his hand.
Thus faith was, ere the written word appear'd,
And men believ'd not what they read but heard.
But fince th' apoftles could not be confin'd
To thefe, or those, but severally defign'd

Their large commiffion round the world to blow;
To fpread their faith, they spread their labours too.
Yet itill their abfent flock their pains did share,
They hearken'd still, for love produces care.
And as mistakes arofe, or difcords fell,
Or bold feducers taught them to rebel,
As charity grew cold, or faction hot,
Or long neglect their leffons had forgot,
For all their wants they wifely did provide,
And preaching by epiftles was supply'd:
So great phyficians cannot all attend,

But fome they vifit, and to fome they fend.
Yet all thofe letters were not writ to all;
Nor first intended but occafional,

Their abfent fermons; nor if they contain
All needful doctrines, are thofe doctrines plain.
Clearets by frequent preaching must be wrought;
They writ but feldom, but they daily taught.
And what one faint has said of holy Paul,
“He darkly writ," is true apply'd to all.
For this obfcurity could heaven provide
More prudently than by a living guide,
As doubts arofe, the difference to decide?

A guide was therefore needful, therefore made;
Ard, if appointed, fure to be obey'd.

Thus, with due reverence to th' apostles' writ

By which my fons are taught, to which fubinit;

I think, thofe truths, their facred works contain,

The church alone can certainly explain:

That following ages, leaning on the past,
May reft upon the primitive at laft.

Nor would I thence the word no rule infer,
But none without the church-interpreter.
Because, as I have urg'd before, 'tis mute,
And is itself the fubject of difpute.

But what th' apoftles their fucceffors taught,
They to the next, from them to us is brought,
Th' undoubted sense which is in fcripture fought.
From hence the church is arm'd, when errors rife,
To flop their entrance, and prevent surprise;
And, fafe entrench'd within, her outward foes
defies.

By thefe all festering fores her councils heal,
Which time or has difclos'd, or fhall reveal ;
For d.fcord cannot end without a last appeal.
Nor can a council national decide,
But with fubordination to her guide:

(I with the cause were on that iffue try'd)

Much lefs the fcripture; for fuppofe debate

Betwixt pretenders to a fair eftate,
Bequeath'd by fome legator's laft intent ;
(Such is our dying Saviour's teftament:)
The will is prov'd, is open'd, and is read;
The doubtful heirs their differing titles plead :
All vouch the words their intereft to maintain,
And each pretends by thofe his caufe is plain.
Shall then the Teftament award the right?
No, that's the Hungary for which they fight;
The field of battle, fubject of debate;
The thing contended for, the fair estate.
The fenfe is intricate, 'tis only clear
What vowels and what confonants are there.

Now this your feats the more unkindly take,
Thofe prying varlets hit the blots you make,
Becaufe fome ancient friends of yours declare,
Your only rule of faith the fcriptures are.
Interpreted by men of judgment found,
Which every fect will for themselves expound;
Nor think lefs reverence to their doctors due
For fourd interpretation, than to you.
If then, by able Heads, are understood
Your brother prophets, who reform'd abroad;
Thofe able heads expound a wiier way,
That their own sheep their fhepherd thould obey.
But if you mean yourselves are only found,
That doctrine turns the reformation round,

And all the reft are falfe reformers found; て

Because in fundry points you stand alone,

Not in communion join'd with any one;

And therefore must be all the church, or none.
Then, till you have agreed whofe judge is best,
Against this forc'd fubmiffion they protest:
While found and found a different fenfe explains,
Both play at hardhead till they break their brains;
And from their chairs each other's force defy,
While unregarded thunders vainly fly.

I pass the reft, because your church alone
Of all ufurpers beft could fill the throne.
But neither you, nor any feet beside,
For this high office can be qualify'd,
With neceffary gifts requir'd in such a guide.
For that, which muft direct the whole, must be y

Bound in one bond of faith and unity:
But all your feveral churches difagrees

The confubftantiating church and priest
Refuse communion to the Calvinist:
The French reform'd from preaching you restrain,
Because you judge their ordination vain ;

And fo they judge of yours, but donors must ordain.

In short, in doctrine, or in difcipline,
Not one reform'd can with another join:
But all from each, as from damnation, fly;
No union they pretend, but in Non-Popery :
Nor, fhould their members in a fynod meet,
Could any church prefume to mount the feat,
Above the reft, their difcords to decide;
None would obey, but each would be the guide:
And face to face diffenfions would increase ;
For only distance now preferves the peace.
All in their turns accusers, and accus'd:
Babel was never half fo much confus'd:

What one can plead the reft can plead as well;
For amongst equals lies no last appeal,
And all confefs themselves are fallible.

Now fince you grant some neceffary guide,
All who can err are justly laid afide:
Because a truft so sacred to confer
Shews want of fuch a fure interpreter ;
And how can he be needful who can err?
Then granting that unerring guide we want,
That fuch there is you stand oblig'd to grant :
Our Saviour elfe were wanting, to fupply
Our needs, and obviate that neceffity.
It then remains, that church can only be
The guide, which owns unfailing certainty;
Or elfe you flip your hold, and change your fide,
Relapsing from a neceffary guide.

But this annex'd condition of the crown,
Immunity from errors, you difown;

Here then you shrink, and lay your weak pretenfions down.

For petty royalties you raise debate ;
But this unfailing universal state

You fhun; nor dare fucceed to fuch a glorious

weight;

And for that caufe thofe promifes deteft,
With which our Saviour did his church invest;
But ftrive t' evade, and fear to find them true,
As confcious they were never meant to you:
All which the mother-church afferts her own,
And with unrival'd claim afcends the throne.
So when of old th' almighty Father fate
In council, to redeem our ruin'd ftate,
Millions of millions, at a distance round,
Silent the facred confiftory crown'd,

To hear what mercy, m.xt with juftice, could propound:

All prompt with eager pity, to fulfil
The full extent of their Creator's will.
But when the stern conditions were declar'd,
A mournful whisper through the host was heard,
And the whole hierarchy, with heads hung down,
Submiffively declia'd the ponderous proffer'd crown.
Then, not till then, th' eternal Son from high
Rofe in the ftrength of all the Deity:
Stood forth t' accept the terms, and underwent
A weight which all the frame of heaven had bent,
Nor he himself could bear, but as Omnipotent.
Now, to remove the leaft remaining doubt,
That ev'n the blear-ey'd fects may find her out,

Behold what heavenly rays adorn her brows,
What from his wardrobe her Belov'd allows
To deck the wedding-day of his unspotted spouse.
ehold what marks of majesty the brings;
Richer than ancient heirs of eastern kings:

To fhew whom the commands, and who obeys ▸
With thefe to hind, or fet the finner free,
With that to affert fpiritual royalty.

One in herself, not rent by fchifin, but found,
Entire, one folid fhining diamond;
Not fparkles thatter'd into fects like you:
One is the church, and must be to be true;
One central principle of unity,

As undivided, fo from errors free,
As one in faith, so one in fanctity.

Thus fhe, and none but the, th' infulting rage
Of heretics oppos'd from age to age:

Still when the giant-brood invades her throne, She floops from heaven, and meets them half way

down,

And with paternal thunder vindicates her crown.
Put like Egyptian forcerers you stand,
And vainly lift aloft your magic wand,

To fweep away the fwarms of vermin from the

land:

You could like them, with like infernal force, Produce the plague, but rot arreft the course. But when the boils and blotches, with difgrace And public fcandal, fat upon the face, Themfelves attack'd, the Magi ftrove no more, They faw God's finger, and their fate deplore; Themfelves they could not cure of the difhoneft fore.

Thus one, thus pure, behold her largely fpread,
Like the fair ocean from her mother-bed;
From east to west triumphantly the rides,
All fhores are water'd by her wealthy tides.
The gospel-found, diffus'd from pole to pole,
Where winds can carry, and where waves can roll
The felf-fame doctrine of the facred page
Convey'd to every clime in every age.

Here let my forrow give my fatire place,
To raife new blushes on my British race;
Our failing fhips like common-fewers we use,
And through our diftant colonies diffufe
The draught of dungeons, and the stench of
news.

Whom, when their home-bred honesty is loft,
We difembogue on fome far Indian coaft :
Thieves, pandards, pallards, fins of every fort;
Thofe are the manufactures we export;
And thefe the missioners our zeal has made :
For, with my country's pardon be it said,
Religion is the least of all our trade.

Yet fome improve their traffic more than we ;
For they on gain, their only god, rely,
And fet a public price on piety.
Induftrious of the needle and the chart,
They run full fail to their Japonian mart;
Prevention fear, and, prodigal of fame,
Sell all of Chriftian to the very name;
Nor leave enough of that to hide their naked
shame.

Thus, of three marks, which in the creed wa view,

Not one of all can be applied to you:

Much lefs the fourth; in vain, alas! you feek
Th' ambitious title of apoftolic:

God-like defcent! 'tis well your blood can be
Prov'd noble in the third or fourth degree:
For ail of ancient that you had before,

(I mean what is not horrow'd from our store)
Was error fulminated o'er and o'er ;
Old herefies condemn'd in ages past,
By care and time recover'd from the blast.

'Tis faid with eafe, but never can be prov'd, The church her old foundations has remov'd, And built new doctrines on unstable sands:

Judge that ye winds and rains: you prov'd her, yet the ftands.

Thole ancient doctrines charg'd on her for new,
Shew, when, and how, and from what hands they

grew.

We claim no power, when herefies grow bold,
To coin new faith, but still declare the old.
How else could that obfcene difeafe be purg'd,
When controverted texts are vainly urg'd?
To prove tradition new, there's fomewhat more
Requir'd, than faying, 'twas not us'd before.
Thofe monumental arms are never stirr'd,
Till fchifm or herefy call down Goliah's fword.
Thus, what you call corruptions, are, in truth,
The firft plantations of the gofpel's youth;
Old standard faith: but caft your eyes again,
And view thofe errors which new fects maintain,
Or which of old disturb'd the church's peaceful
reign;

And we can point each period of the time,
When they began, and who begot the crime;
Can calculate how long th' eclipfe endur'd,
Who interpos'd, what digits were obfcur'd:
Of all which are already pafs'd away,
We know the rife, the progrefs, and decay.
Despair at our foundations then to strike,
Till you can prove your faith apoftolic;

A limpid ftream drawn from the native fource;
Succeffion lawful in a lineal courfe.
Prove any church, oppos'd to this our head,
So one, fo pure, fo uncontin'dly fpread,
Under one chief of the fpiritual state,

The members all combin'd, and all fubordinate.
Shew fuch a seamless coat, from fchifm fo free,
In no communion join'd with herefý.
If fuch a one you find, let truth prevail:
1ll when your weights will in the balance fail:
church unprincipled kicks up the scale.
But if you cannot think (nor fure you can
Suppofe in God what were unjuft in man)
That he, the fountain of eternal grace,
Should fuffer falfehood, for fo long a space,
To banish truth, and to ufurp her place:
That feven fucceffive ages fhould be loft,
And preach damnation at their proper coft;
That all your erring ancestors fhould die,
Drown'd in th' abyss of deep idolatry :
If piety forbid fuch thoughts to rife,
Awake, and open your unwilling eyes:
God hath left nothing for each age undone,
From this to that wherein he fent his Son:
Then think but well of him, and half your work is
done. -

Thus, while with heavenly charity she spoke, A ftreaming blaze the filent fhadows broke; Shot from the skies; a chearful azure light: The birds obfcene to forefts wing'd their flight, And gaping graves receiv'd the wandering guilty fpright.

Such were the pleafing triumphs of the sky,

She thought good-manners bound her to invite
The ftranger dame to be her guest that night.
'Tis true, coarfe diet, and a short repast,
(She faid) were weak inducements to the tafte
Of one fo nicely bred, and fo unus'd to faft:
But what plain fare her cottage could afford,
A hearty welcome at a homely board,
Was freely hers; and, to supply the rest,
An honeft meaning, and an open breast :
Laft, with content of mind, the poor man's wealth,
A grace-cup to their common patron's health.
This fhe defir'd her to accept, and stay,

For fear the might be wilder'd in her way,
Because the wanted an unerring guide,

And then the dew-drops on her filken hide
Her tender conftitution did declare,

Too lady-like a long fatigue to bear,
And rough inclemencies of raw nocturnal air.
But most the fear'd that, travelling fo late
Some evil-minded beafts might lie in wait,
And without witness wreak their hidden hate.
The Panther, though the lent a listening ear,
Had more of lion in her than to fear:
Yet, wifely weighing, fince fhe had to deal
With many foes, their numbers might prevail,
Return'd her all the thanks fhe could afford;
And took her friendly hoftefs at her word:
Who entering firft her lowly roof, a shed

With hoary mofs, and winding ivy fpread, head,}

Thus graciously bespoke her welcome guest:
So might there walls, with your fair prefence
bleft,

Become your dwelling-place of everlasting rest;
Not for a night, or quick revolving year,
Welcome an owner, not a fojourner.
This peaceful feat my poverty fecures;
War feldom enters but where wealth allures:
Nor yet defpife it; for this poor abode
Has oft receiv'd, and yet receives, a God;
A God victorious of a Stygian race

Here laid his facred lim! s, and fanctify'd the place.
This mean retreat did mighty Pan contain:
Be emulous of him, and pomp disdain,
And dare not to debase your foul to gain.

The filent ftranger (tood amaz'd to fee
Contempt of wealth, and wilful poverty:
And, though ill habits are not foon control'd,
A while fufpended her defire of gold.
But civilly drew in her sharpen'd paws,
Not violating hofpitable laws,

And pacify'd her tail, and lick'd her frothy jaws.
The Hind did first her country cates provide;
Then couch'd herself fecurely by her fide.

THE THIRD PART.

UCH malice mingled with a little wit,

writ:

Because the Muse has peopled Caledon
With Panthers, Bears, and Wolves, and beasts
unknown,

As if we were not stock'd with monfters of our

own.

Let A fop answer, who has fet to view
Such kinds as Greece and Phrygia never knew;
And mother Hubbard, in her homely dress,
Has fharply blam'd a British Lioness ;
That queen, whofe feaft the factious rabble keep,
Expos'd obfcenely naked and afcep.
Led by thofe great examples, may not I
The wanted organs of their words supply?
If men tranfact like brutes, 'tis equal then
For brutes to claim the privilege of men.
Others our Hind of folly will indite,
To entertain a dangerous guest by night.
Let thofe remember, that the cannot die
Till rolling time is loft in round eternity;

Nor need the fear the Panther, though untam'd,
Because the Lion's peace was row proclaim'd:
The wary favage would not give offence,
To forfeit the protection of her prince :

But watch'd the time her vengeance to complete,
When all her furry fons in frequent fenate met.
Meanwhile the quench'd her fury at the flood,
And with a lenten fallad cool'd her blood.

[Did all the honours of her house fo well,
No fharp debates difturb'd the friendly meal.
She turn'd the talk, avoiding that extreme,
To common dangers paft, a fadly-pleafing theme;
Remembering every storm which tofs'd the ftate,
When both were objects of the public hate,
And dropt a tear betwixt for her own childrens
fate.

Nor fail'd the then a full review to make
Of what the Panther suffer'd for her fake:
Her loft efteem, her truth, her loyal care,
Her faith unshaken to an exil`d heir,
Her ftrength t' endure, her courage to defy ;
Her choice of honourable infamy.

On thefe, prolixly thankful, she enlarg'd ;
Then with acknowledgment herself she charg'd;
For friendship, of itself an holy tie,

Is made more facred by advertity.

Now fhould they part, malicious tongues would
fay,

They met like chance companions on the way,
Whom mutual fear of robbers had poffefs'd;
While danger lafted, kindness was profefs'd;
But, that once o'er, the fhort-liv'd union ends:
The road divides, and there divide the friends.
The Panther nodded when her speech was done,
And thank'd her coldly in a hollow tone:
But faid, her gratitude had gone too far
For common offices of chriftian care.
If to the lawful heir fhe had been true,
She paid but Cæfar what was Cæfar's due.
I might, he added, with like praise describe
Your fuffering fons, and fo return your bribe:
Eut incenfe from my hands is poorly priz'd;
For gifts are fcorn' where givers are despis'd.
I ferv'd a turn, and then was caft away;
You, like the gaudy fly, your wings difplay,
And fip the fweets, and bask in your great patron's
day.

This heard, the matron was not flow to find
What fort of malady had feiz'd her mind :
Difdain, with gnawing envy, fell defpight,
And canker'd malice, ftood in open fight:
Ambition, intereft, pride without control,
And jealoufy, the jaundice of the foul;
Revenge, the bloody minifter of il!,
With all the lean tormentors of the will.
"Twas easy now to guess from whence arose
Her new-made union with her ancient foes,
Her forc'd civilities, her faint embrace,
Affected kindness with an alter'd face &
Yet durft the not too deeply probe the wound,
As hoping ftill the nobler parts were found:
But ftrove with Anodynes t' affuage the fmart,
And mildly thus her medicine did impart.

Complaints of lovers help to eafe their pain ;
It shows a rest of kindness to complain;
A friendship loth to quit its former hold;
And confcious merit may be justly bold.
But much more just your jealousy would fhew,
If others' good were injury to you:
Witnefs, ye heavens, how I rejoice to fee

Their commons, though but coarse, were nothing Rewarded worth and rifing loyalty.

For now the Hind, whole noble nature ftrove T'express her plain simplicity of love,

Your warrior offspring that upheld the crown,
The fcarlet honour of your peaceful gown,

Are the most pleasing objects I can find,
Charms to my fight, and cordials to my mind ;

When virtue fpooms before a profperous gale,
My heaving withes help to fill the fail;

And if my prayers for all the brave were heard,
Cafar fhould ftill have fuch, and such fhould ftill
reward.

The labour'd earth your pains have fow'd and
till'd;

'Tis juft you reap the product of the field:
Your's be the harvest, 'tis the beggar's gain
To glean the fallings of the loaded wain
Such fcatter'd ears as are not worth your care,
Your charity for alms may fafely fpare,
For alms are but the vehicles of prayer.
My daily bread is literally implor'd;
I have ro harns nor granaries to hoard.
If Cæfar to his own his hand extends,
Say which of yours his charity offends:

You know he largely gives to more than are his
friends.

Are you defrauded when he feeds the poor?

Our mite decreases nothing of your store.

I am but few, and by your tare you fee

My crying fins are not of luxury

Some jufter motive fure your mind withdraws,
And makes you break our friendship's holy laws;
For barefac'd envy is too bafe a cause.

Shew more occafion for your difcontent;
Your love, the Wolf, would help you to invent :
Some German quarrel, or, as times go now,
Some French, where force is uppermoft, will do.
When at the fountain's head, as merit ought
To claim the place, you take a fwilling draught,
How eafy 'tis an envious eye to throw,
And tax the sheep for troubling ftreams below;
Or call her (when no farther cause you find)
An enemy profefs'd of all your kind.

But then, perhaps, the wicked world would think,
The Wolf defign'd to eat as well as drink.

This laft allufion gall'd the Panther more,
Because indeed it rubb'd upon the fore.

Yet feem'd the not to winch, though fhrewdly pain'd:

But thus her paffive character maintain'd.

I never grudg'd, whate'er my foes report,
Your flaunting fortune in the Lion's court.
You have your day, or you are much bely'd,
But I am always on the fuffering fide:
You know my doctrine, and I need not say
I will not, but I cannot disobey.
On this firm principle I ever stood;
He of my fons who fails to make it good,
By one rebellious act renounces to my blood.
Ah, faid the Hind, how many fons have you,
Who call you mother, whom you never knew!
But most of them who that relation plead,
Are fuch ungracious youths as with you dead.
They gape at rich revenues which you hold,
And fain would nibble at your grandame gold;
Enquire into your years, and laugh to find
Your crazy temper fhews you much declin'd.
Were you not dim, and coated, you might fee
A pack of cheats that claim a pedigree,
No more of kin to you than you to me.
Do you not know, that for a little coin,
Heralds can foift a name into the line?
They ask you bleffing but for what you have,
But once poffefs'd of what with care you fave,
The wanton boys would pifs upon your grave.

Your fons of latitude that court your grace,
Though moft refembling you in form and face,
Are far the worst of your pretended race.
And, but I blush your honesty to blot,
Pray God you prove them lawfully begot:
For in fome popifh libels I have read,
The Wolf has been too bufy in your bed;
At least her hinder parts, the helly-piece,
The paurch, and all that Scorpio claims, are his.
Their malice too a fore fufpicion brings;

For though they dare not bark, they snarl at kings:
Nor blame them for intruding in your line;
Fat bifhoprics are full of right divine.

Think you your new French profelytes are come
To ftarve abroad, because they ftarv'd at home?
Your benefices twinkled from afar ;

They found the new Meffiah by the star :
Thofe Swiffes fight on any fide for pay,
And 'tis the living that conforms, not they.
Mark with what management their tribes divide,
Some stick to you, and fome to t' other fide,
That many churches may for many mouths pro-
vide.

More vacant pulpits would more converts make ;
All would have latitude enough to take :
The rest unbenefic'd your fects maintain ;
For ordinations without cures are vain,
And chamber practice is a filent gain.
Your fons of breadth at home are much like thefe ;
Their foft and yielding metals run with ease:
They melt, and take the figure of the mould;
But harden and preferve it beft in gold.

Your Delphic fword, the Panther then reply'd,
Is double-edg'd, and cuts on either fide.
So.ne fons of mine, who bear upon their shield
Three ftceples argent in a fable field,
Have tharply tax'd your converts, who unfed
Have follow'd you for miracles of bread;
Such who themselves of no religion are,
Allur'd with gain, for any will declare.
Bare lies with bold aff.rtions they can face;
But dint of argument is out of place.
The grim logician puts them in a fright;
'Tis eafter far to flourish than to fight.
Thus our eighth Henry's marriage they defame;
They fay the fchifm of beds began the game,
Divorcing from the church to wed the dame:
Though largely prov'd, and by himself profefs'd,
That confcience, confcience would not let him rest:
i mean, rot till poffefs'd of her he lov'd,
And old, uncharming Catharine was remov`d.
For fundry years before he did complain,
Apd told his ghostly confeffor his pain.
With the fame impudence, without a ground,
They fay that, look the reformation round,
No treatife of humility is found.

But if none were, the gospel does not want;
Our Saviour preach'd it, and I hope you grant,
The fermon on the mount was protestant.

No doubt, reply'd the Hind, as fure as all
The writings of Saint Peter and Saint Paul:
On that decifion let it ftand or fall.
Now for my converts, who, you fay, unfed
Have follow'd me for miracles of bread;
Judge not by hearfay, but obferve at leaft,

If fince their change their loaves have been increas'd
The Lion buys no converts; if he did,

Beafts would be fold as faft as he could bid.
