contented, and dutiful fubjects. Let us prize our freedom; but not use our liberty for a cloke of maliciousness*. There are men who ftrike at liberty under the term licentiousness. There are others who aim at popularity under the disguise of patristifm. Be aware of both. Extremes are dangerous. There is at present amongst us, perhaps more danger of the latter than of the former. For which reafon I would exhort you to pay all due regard to the government over us; to the KING and all in authority; and to lead a quiet and peaceable. life t.-And while I am speaking of loyalty to our earthly prince, fuffer me juft to put you in mind to be loyal alfo to the fupreme RULER of the univerfe, by whom kings reign, and princes decree juftice. To which king eternal, immortal, invisible, even to the ONLY WISE GOD be all honour and praife, DOMINION and thanksgiving, through JESUS » CHRIST our LORD. AMEN.

*CONSECRATION

OF THE

BISHOPS

IN

DUBLIN,

By the Lord Primate in the year 1660.

HEREAS we have thought fit to appoint the 27th of this inftant January 1660, for the confecration of bishops; to the end therefore that the fame may be fo ordered, as decency and the dignity of fo holy an office fhall require; we have thought fit, by the advice of our brethren the bishops, who are to affift in that facred adminiftration, and with whom we have confulted in that behalf, to order,

That at feven o'clock in the morning of the faid day, the lords bifhops elect do attend us, at the dean of Chrift church his house, and

that

that all the bishops confecrators be there alfo in their cornered caps, rochets and chimers.

That notice be given to the faid deans of the two cathedral churches of Dublin, that they likewise are expected to attend at the fame time and place in their formalities.

That the faid deans refpectively shall give orders to the dignitarics, prebendaries, canons, petit-canons, vicars, choral; and chorifters, that they do attend at the fame hour, in their refpective formalities in the body of Christ-church.

That the vice-chancellor, or pro- vice-chancellor of the university, all doctors of divinity, and of the law, as also all the minifters and civilians in this city, with the whole university, do likewife repair thither, fo far as they can conveniently furnish themselves with gowns and formalities to their refpe&ive offices and dignities appertaining.

That the order of proceeding be as follows;

That the purfuivant of the court of preroga tive, and the apparator general bare-headed. The vergers of the faid two cathedrals also bare headed.

The chorifters two and two, and the rest of the procedents alfo in order, two and two as followeth.

Vicars chorals.

Petit-canons.

Prebendaries.

Dignitaries.

The faid two deans.

The bishops elect in their albs.

The lord primate's gent. usher, and secretary bare-headed.

The other bishops confecrators two and two. The beadle of the university.

The vice-chancellor, or pro-vice-chancelor, and provost.

Deans and doctors two and two.

That the abovesaid orders may proceed with a filent, folemn, and flow paced gravity, until the time of entrance into the west-gate of St. Patrick's church, where the vicars and chorifters are to proceed finging into the choir, and there continue finging the te deum, accompanied with the organ, until the archbishops, bishops, and the rest of the principal precedents fhall be placed and feated in their respective stalls.

- That the office of morning prayer be folemnly celebrated by the dean of the faid church. Which ended, Dr. Jer. Taylor, lord bishop elect of Down, defigned to preach the concio ad clerum, is to afcend the pulpit during the finging of per veni nobis.
