exhibits traces of elegance. A small part of the beautiful arched ceiling fell down some years ago. It is an erroneous supposition, that the ruined castle, or rather fort, on the adjoining shore, was connected with the abbey, and intended for its defence. Netley fort was most probably built by Henry VIII. at the time of his erecting the other castles for the defence of the coasts in this part of the kingdom. The usual places at which boats land on the shores of Southampton Water and the Itchen, are, Redbridge, Eling, Cracknore hard, Hythe, Fawley, Calshot Castle, Hamble, Netley, Weston, Itchen ferry, Northam, Bittern, and Wood mill. Boats may be hired either at Itchen ferry or Southampton quay, and the excursion may be adapted to the state of the tide. INDEX.
