(1) Fabrics of cotton, (white,) pay a duty of $33 69 per 220 pounds. Such as are printed and colored are subject to a duty of $39 64 per 220 pounds. Valentias, swansdowns, toilinets, cassinets, calimancos, merinos, bombazets, flannel of mousselaine'laine, batiste wool, &c., pay a duty ot $33 66 per 220 pounds. (2) This is the lowest rate of duty at which foreign flour is admissible; the price of wheat in Belgium ranging above $2 804 and below $3 74 per hectolitre of 22 gallons. When wheat exceeds this maximum, the importation of flour is duty free, as was the case during the years 1839 and 1840, on which account there is no entry under the head "amount of duties paid." (1) The libbra, or Roman pound, is equal to about 12 ounces avoirdupois. The latter is the base of these calculations. (2) The tariff on masts and spars varies from one lajoccho (one cent) to one scudo, 80 bajocchi ($1 80 each,) according to size in the Mediterranean ports; and from one-fifth of a cent to 60 cents each in the Adriatic ports. (3) Simple colors pay $2 per 112 pounds; chemical colors vary from 5 cents to $1 20 per 112 pounds; varnish pays $15 per 112 pounds. (4) The duty on rye, &c., varies from 40 to 80 cents per 720 pounds, according to the price of domestic grain. (5) Snuff is chargeable with a duty of 820 per 112 pounds; but as only 6 pounds of this commodity was imported, no distinct calculation is assigned to it. |
