in fuch cafes) were rather below the truth than beyond it. Now rebel fury and loyal vengeance began to rage. The zeal of the Roman Catholic priests to prevent rebellion began to be talked of in their own community; and many were the reports endeavoured to be circulated of Father fuch-a-one and Father fuch-a-one, the most pious and venerable characters that ever exifted, being for their loyal exertions, dragged from their houfes by the merciless rebels, and either murdered or tortured with circumftances of inhumanity which I believe were never realized this century, but upon the poor Proteftants at Scollabogue, Wexford-Bridge, and Vinegar-Hill in the following months of June and July. Still expreffes began to multiply, and still accounts of the rebel army became more formidable. The families of the loyalifts, who were almost all Proteftants, of the town and parishes of old Rofs, Kil-Anne, &c. began to throng into this town in large bodies; and they met a moft cordial and humane reception from Captain TOTTENHAM of the Rofs Cavalry, who owns the greater part of the town. This gentleman had lately built fix large, lofty, and elegant houfes in a row, four of which he had well nigh completely finifhed for the reception of any respectable tenants; and all of thefe houses, both the finished, and unfinished, he most loyally and philanthropically, devoted, during the whole difturbance and for fome time afterwards, to the accommodation of those well-tried and well-approved loyal fubjects; though he could not be ignorant of his houfes being likely to fuffer damage by certain fixtures, and by great stakes of nails driven through the plaftering, and the like.

In this season of alarm two pieces of ship-cannon, four pounders, were planted at the court-houfe, with a guard, and a gentleman of the Rofs Cavalry appointed centinel on horseback, to keep the coaft clear of intruders.

Very many of the inhabitants and, perhaps, all the late refugees joined in guarding the feveral paffes to the town." Thole guards being in coloured clothes, it was found neceffary to distinguish them by putting a broad white fealed paper in the front of their hats, on which was written the party's name, and, as a motto, in print-hand "death or "victory" which fome of our loyal Refugees being defirous to improve on, rejected from their papers and fubftituted "Death or GLORY!" This brought on the whole party of our loyal neighbours the nick-name of " GLORY-MEN?". name which though given in contempt, both they and their families feem to glory in. Male and female, children and all, are, collectively called "the Glories." I could not help smiling oneļday, to hear one of our protected rebels faying to another "Oh ! if you were to hear what a damnation little "bitch of a Glory-girl, about eight or nine years old faid to " me as I was carrying home thefe herrings, as this is a faft "day, you know."" There is your piety in your fift, "but would you not rather have a pike than a herring?" Many of the poor inhabitants of this town and country have the almost incredible audacity to charge thofe truly loyal and valuable people with having been the occafion of this rebellion." Rot them, the Swadling thieves" they exclaim, "they are all Orange-men: they were the reunation of us "all, and the promoters of all this mifchief." Indeed fo famous were the METHODISTS, or Stadlers" as the Roman Catholics call them, for their loyalty and firm adherence to the truth of their profeffion when they were brought to the pike, that fome of the rebels fay of them" They are true Prod-e-flans; for they fand-a-prod with the very divel himself! 100 gabholy of th initu ada

At length a strong party of foldiers came to town. Never were fuch vifitants more welcome to the loyal inhabitants. They were entertained with variety of food, and, without, obligation, thus, for fome weeks, at free quarters. Mean time the reports by exprefs were fo uniform and fo circumftantial in the most alarming particulars, that many of the inhabitants fled, with the more helpless, part of their families to Wales, whither many others, from various parts of those disaffected counties, had fled before them. Still fresh troops> came in, and fome of the inhabitants began to murmur at the increase, though informed that entertainment of food and drink was not required; and indeed fome of the foldiers were rather sturdy in their manners, as though their entertainment was extorted by fear. In the billeting, fome of the inhabitants complained of partiality. Mr. PETER BEGLEY, Linen and woollen-draper and Haberdasher in John's-street, refufed to lodge foldiers' wives..He foon, became very confpicuous for his hofpitality for he had one hundred and fifty men billeted on him. For this account I have his own authority, and his permiflion to infert it with the addition of his name. countenances of almoft all but the military themfelves. Moft others kept close to their houses to take care of them, and much of their difcourfe to me was, of the devastation and defolation occafioned by the military burning and destroying places that bloomed with profperity till their approach. Their order and unfbaken firmness of conduct; their authoritative cafe in their quarters; coming in and going out at any hour; or at any part of the house, even if the windows or door happened to be fout, and was not opened at the second or third knock ;-these were alfo part of the general topics of the feason. The number of centinels was many: they were placed on various parts of the town-wall, at the gates, at head and other quarters; and, befides the main guard, which was very ftrong pic quets and cannon were placed in all paffes. Scarcely any other clothes but military uniform were to be feen. Such was the heat of the weather, and the throng of military on every floor, that the window-fashes were generally open; and, whenever I turned my face that way, instead of catching the sprightly looks of a Rofs lady or gentleman, there I had to behold-a throng of foldiers! a welcome fight indeed, confidered in one point of view; but, in another the dire neceffity which brought them there heightened the contraft not very agreeably. They town, which appeared fo dead with many others, as to tincture even the gay fprightly feafon with an appearance of heavy, heavy gloominefs, was alive with them. From the windows of every ftory of the buildings they ftretched out their necks, and fhoulders, and hollowed out uncouth jokes to those in the adjoining houses; and thus, their clumfy wit, often highly tinctured with low obscenity, and interrupted with loud peals of unmeaning laughter, was bandied from one end of the street to the other. This appeared the more ftriking from the former well known abodes of fober morality and deco rum. Revolving all these things in my mind the words of the prophet

prophet JOEL often occurred, which I fhall now mention, though I know they have a farther fenfe than that in which I now apply them. "Blow ye the trumpet in ZION, and found an alarm in my holy mountain! On the first of June, news having come to town that a party of rebels, to the number of about three hundred were throwing up fome trenches accross the high road leading to Grange, near Kil-Anne; a party of the 5th dragoons and of the Mid-Lothian and Rofs cavalry, to the number of thirty-fix, fet out from this town to intercept, and if poffible • "Or Cornet" fays the margin.
