The Sublime Puritan, Issue 4This is a study of poet John Milton's reputation and importance during the Victorian era, while highlighting the difference between modern and Victorian modes of criticism. Modern critics are concerned with what Milton means, while Victorian critics focused on what Milton meant to their entire society. For Victorians' Milton remained a vital presence, his political ideas found new champions, and his poetry continued to provoke responses from all levels of society--positive to negative--but never indifferent. |
