Participles are frequently used as adjectives. They are like common adjectives also used substantively:-

Der Zaudernde, he who hesitates; ein Zaudernder, one who hesitates. Die Zaubernden, those who are (: keep :) hesitating. Der Preisende, he who is praising; ein Preisender, one who is praising. Die Preisenden, those who give praise.

Der Liebende, loving one, lover; der Geliebte, loved one.

10. Was hilft es viel von Stimmung reden? Dem Zaudernden erscheint sie nie. What boots it to stand talking about

being in tune? The hesitating never is so.

32. Thätig ihn Preisenden, Liebe Beweisenden, brüderlich Speisenden, predigend Reisenden, Wonne Verheißenden, euch ist der Meister nah', euch ist er da! Ye who are giving praise to him through your deeds (: works :), who are manifesting love, who share your daily meals with your brethren, who travel

preaching him, who promise bliss, to you the Master is near, for you he is here!

Jammer! von keiner Menschenseele zu fassen, daß mehr als Ein Geschöpf in die Liefe dieses Elends versant, daß nicht das erste genugthat für die Schuld aller übrigen in seiner windenden Todesnoth vor den Augen des ewig Verzeihenden! Not the first!-Woe! woe! beyond the grasp of any human soul to conceive, that more than one creature should have sunk into such a depth of wretchedness, that the first, in its writhing death-agony, was not sufficient to atone for the guilt of all the rest in the sight of the Ever-Pardoning!

175. Ueber des Erschlagenen Stätte schweben rächende Geister und lauern auf den wiederkehrenden Mörder. Avenging spirits hover over the place (: grave:) of the slain, and lie in wait for the returning murderer.

177. (Faust aufschließend.) Sie ahnet nicht, daß der Geliebte lauscht, die Ketten klirren hört, das Stroh, das rauscht. Faust,

Die Schöne, the fair one; eine Schöne, a fair one.-Die Schöne is sometimes used for die Schönheit, beauty:

15. Erfreut Euch der lebendig reichen Schöne! Rejoice in the living profusion of beauty!

In a few instances, the abstract adjective is used substantively in reference to persons, and denotes people collectively of a certain description:

Man sah da Alt und Jung, Groß und Klein, versammelt, old and young, great and small, were there seen assembled.

37. Zufrieden jauchzet Groß und Klein. Big and little are huzzaing joyously.

Many adjectives are used as adverbs, without any change of termination.-Adjectives used adverbially, remain undeclined; they may consequently be readily distinguished from attributive adjectives. (See Practice, pp. 91 & 92.)

10., wenn fern des schnellen Laufes Kranz vom schwer erreichten Ziele winket, wenn man nach dem heftigen Wirbeltanze die Nächte schmausend vertrinket. when, from afar, the garland (prize :) of the swift course beckons from the hard-won goal,-when after the impetuous whirling dance, one drinks away the night carousing.

The numeral ein, one, is one and the same word with the indefinite article, but has a stronger accent, and is generally written with a capital initial: Ein Haus, one house; ein Haus, a house. 58. Nur mit Entsezen wach' ich Morgens auf; ich möchte bittere Thränen weinen, den Tag zu sehen, der mir in seinem Lauf nicht Einen Wunsch erfüllen wird, nicht Einen. In the morning I wake only to horror. I could fain weep bitter tears to see the day, which in its course will not fulfil one wish for me, no, not one.
