PREFACE

N this book, while not altogether forsaking the beaten track, an attempt has been made to restate many Definitions, to reduce their number, to simplify the Classification of the Parts of Speech, and generally, to revise carefully the whole subject.

In the Accidence, considerable attention has been paid to the Gerund, in the hope of coming to a settlement which shall be workable, decisive, and generally acceptable. To give freshness and an air of reality to the subject, Examples in illustration of Rules have been sought from the everyday life of young people.

For guidance in Parsing, two Models fully worked out, and "Some Comments on More Difficult Words" have been supplied.

The educational value of "Analysis" is now being more fully recognised. Accordingly, it has received that fulness of treatment which its comparatively unique importance demands. To the explanatory matter are added five complete Models, one of which, as a suggestion, is from the Latin of Cæsar.
