GENTLEMEN, London, Jan. 12, 1749. I have had the honour to be Tutor to many promifing Youths, fome of which are already launched into the World by various Channels; and with much fecret Pleafure I write it, many of them fhine in their respective Stations. And, if I account myself an Inftrument in their Succefs, and the Good they promote, I hope it will be allowed; I, who took fo much Pains in their Education, from their earlieft Years, and flatter myself with the defired Success, muft, from fuch an Employment myself, have acquired the most proper Method of Inftruction. And I have found none better to impress Wifdom and Knowledge, than by the Way of Dialogue: this habituates the Learner to difcourfe more readily upon a Subject, as it in a more particular Manner fits him for Converfation. I have now digefted my Dialogues into one Body, under the Title of, The HISTORY of ALL NATIONS, both ancient and modern; defcribing their refpective Foundations, Divifions, Situations, Inhabitants, Buildings, Manners, Laws, Cuftoms, Religion, Policy, Arts and Sciences, Trades, Manufactures, Hufbandry, Plants, Animals, Minerals, and whatever elfe is worthy of our Knowledge. I have alfo added NUMBER XXIII, VOL. IV. feveral
