On the two Doctors going to Law about Mr. HURDMAN's Death.

T

O HURDMAN, who expir'd before the term,
Thus THEMIS promis'd to repair his harm :
Courage, my fon; one action on the cafe
The fates allow thee, after thy decease:
For at the bar the doctors fhall appease
Thy ghoft, and to the law refund their fees:
A law-fuit thus, from my attorney's death
Shall fpring, as ferpents from the dragon's teeth.

"O blaft the man that durft afpire
To fteal from heav'n the genial fire,
And animate his finish'd clay
With vital breath a newer way;
The GoDs in clofe commitee fate,
Forming the faucy mortal's fate;
And puzzled their celeftial brains,
To find out penalties and pains.
Debates were held from time to time
To fuit his torment with his crime:
Full oft they met, as oft demurr'd,
And ways and means were ftill deferr'd.

But Jove at length contriv'd the art,
(And Jove lov'd mifcheif at his heart)
To punish him, whose skill had shown
A talent equal to his own.

The GoD, it feems, was much afraid
To have a partner in his trade.

For why? he might, in peopling lands,
Take all his bufinefs off his hands:
And he himself might be undone,
Whilft he was idly looking on.
Thus fearing, to reward his pains,
He hangs the artist up in chains.
And fince the man a man had made;
Refolv'd to match him in his trade,
To earth a woman Jove convey'd.
Then to perfect this new creation,
Each GoD beftow'd fome kind donation.
VENUS gave beauty, HERMES wit;
In short, as ev'ry one thought fit:

CUPID ordain'd, that all should love her ;
And JUNO made a vixen of her.
Thefe qualities thus giv'n in common,
Made up the quintessence of woman.

You've heard, e're now, how templers pay
A free-gift toll on NEW-YEAR'S DAY.
Each gives according to his store:
The poorer, lefs; the richer, more :
Juft as they think they can afford,
They fuit their prefent to my lord.
'Till one defigns with cunning drift,
To purchase favour with his gift;
And fcrues his pocket to the height,
In hopes to be no lofer by't.
With fuch advantage in his view
Did Jove his fubtle work purfue;
And as a furth'rance of his aim,
Excell'd in kindness to the dame..
For he, with unexampled favour,
A curious box, for portion, gave her.
Well wrought it was, of tempting fize
To draw a fortune-hunter's eyes.
Nor need we wonder if the blades,
Carry'd, with forceful bribes, her maids,
And ftorm'd herself with ferenades.
Not one but did her fmiles importune,
And made her vows of life and fortune:
Not one but wifh'd that he could make
Himself a monarch ---- for her fake.
Nor one of these their fuit could gain,--
But EPIMETHEUS was the man.
His negligence, unhelp'd by art,
Found him a paffage to her heart;
He only rais'd a mutual flame,
And got

the box, and won the dame,

Let us fuppofe the happy lover
the forms of marriage over;

The mutual transports running high,
And duck and dear the only cry:
Or let's fuppofe their joys fo full,
Juft at the point of growing dull.

Twas now high time, the husband thought,
To know what portion spouse had brought;
And try, if heav'nly gifts of marriage
Were worth the charges of the carriage:
When breaking open bolts and locks,
He rummag'd fpoufe's jointure box,
And found

he found on the infide,
What many fince have found befide.
Contagions dire, of horrid hue,
Throughout the neighb'ring country flew..
The fea, the earth, and ambient air,
Began th' infectious ill to share,
And man and beaft met equal fare.
"Till pious men found out a way
To offer facrifice, and pray,
With fupplications to atone
For all mans wickedness foregone,
Yet ftill the plague rag'd unconfin'd,
Diffufive borne by restless wind;
"Till corn and oil the Gons appeas'd:
And thus the fore contagion ceas'd.

From hence the custom first arose,
When woman all their gifts expofe ;.
If they a dire diftemper fcatter,
That men repent in barly-water..

BAVIUS.

Si natura negat, facit indignatio verfum.

HEN knaves of juftice ceafe t'opprefs mankind; Or truth and honour we in jailors find: When C---R's honefty outweighs his pride; Or 'mongst the poor fhall ill-got wealth divide: When B---D's white, inviduous, fickly face Shall know a blufh, or fhow one fign of grace: When tipftaffs fhall forget to take their fees; Or their poor pris'ners find a moment's ease: When C---r's heart and tongue fhall once agree And think, or fpeak what's found divinity : When P---CE in cunning fhall behind him come, And in the praise of his dear felf be dumb: When all the rest of this fcrub mongrel tribe, Bailiffs and tnrnkeys fhall refufe a bribe : When DIAN P. ----T fhall be prov'd the wife Of admiral H----R, or reform her life; When W-Ms fhall the fecret place reveal, Which, like the royal oak, did him conceal : Then will I falfe to my dear CHLOE prove, And think no more of poetry and love.
