Dum vires Te dante tuas poft cuncta fupremum
Sub pedibus calcabo Haden, faucefque fepulchri
Horribiles prædâ faturabo victor opimâ.

Tum demum leto ereptas noftroque redemptas
Sanguine Dux referens turmas, patria aftra revertar ;
Teque iterum, venerande Pater, tuaque ora videbo
Explicita, & nebulis irarum blanda fugatis.
Pax ftabilis lætamque ornabit Gratia frontem,
Vividaque æternis manabunt Gaudia rivis.
Conticuit: vultu tacitus fed perftitit almo
Suave loqui: fpirat miti divinus in ore

Gentem Amor humanam amplexus; fuper omnia fulget
In Patrem Pietas. Ceu victima læta Parentis

Imperium magni expectat. Stupor occupat omnes
Calicolas; nec quifquam ingens fcrutarier orfus
Arcanum. Deinde Omnipotens fic voce remifit:

O cœlo terrifque Homini Pax fola caduco,
Sola relicta Salus! O unica noftra Voluptas!

While by Thee rais'd I ruin all My Foes,

Death laft, and with his Carcass glut the Grave:
Then with the multitude of My redeem'd
Shall enter Heav'n long abfent, and return,
FATHER, to fee Thy face, wherein no cloud
Of anger fhall remain; but peace affur'd
And reconcilement: Wrath fhall be no more
Thenceforth, but in Thy prefence Joy entire.

His words here ended, but His meek afpect

Silent yet spake, and breath'd immortal love
To mortal men, above which only shon
Filial obedience: as a facrifice

Glad to be offer'd, he attends the will
Of his great FATHER. Admiration seiz'd
All Heav'n, what this might mean, and whither tend
Wond'ring; but foon th' Almighty thus reply'd:

O Thou in Heav'n and Earth the only Peace
Found out for mankind under wrath! O Thou

Scis bene, quàm dilecta Mihi quæcunque creavi,
Utque Hominem, noras, operum licet ultima pars fit,
Non minus indulgens foveam. Te quippe propinquo
Hoc folio, Te complexu fecedere nostro,
Dulce Decus, patiar paulum nudatus, ut ipsum
Eripiam penitùs leto gentemque caducam.
Quam folus fervare potes, Tute indue Gentis
Naturam, humanofque artus; Hominefque morare
Inter Homo, infuetâ mirandum! Virginis alvo
Quondam emerfurus, veniet cum tempus: Adamo
Te natum, caput & fontem ftirps noscet Adami.
Omnis in Illo Hominum gens lapfa; repullulat in Te
Haud fecus ac radice aliâ, cuicunque renafci
Contigerit. Gentem Noxa illius inquinat omnem :
At Tua purgabit Pietas, quot fe fuaque ultro
Abnuerint, quemcunque ferent ea Facta colorem.
Per Te frondescent iterum, atque inserta feraci
Germina læta magis furgent & fortia trunco.

My fole complacence! well Thou know'ft how dear
To Me are all My works, nor Man the least
Though laft created; that for him I fpare
Thee from My bofom, and right hand, to fave
(By lofing Thee a while) the whole Race loft.
Thou therefore, whom thou only canft redeem,
Their Nature also to Thy Nature join ;
And be Thy felf Man among men on earth,
Made flesh, when time fhall be, of Virgin feed,

By wond'rous birth: be Thou in Adam's room
The Head of all mankind, though Adam's Son.
As in him perish all men, so in Thee,
As from a fecond root, fhall be reftor'd
As many as are reftor'd; without Thee none.
His crime makes guilty all his Sons; Thy merit
Imputed fhall abfolve them, who renounce
Their own both righteous and unrighteous deeds:
And live in Thee transplanted, and from Thee

En !

En! (ita Fas Equumque jubent) Humana rependet
Crimina Homo; mortis damnabitur; inde refurget,
Reftituetque fuo redivivos fanguine Fratres.

Sic Odii inferni demum implacabile virus
Cœleftis fuperabit Amor, referetque redemptos
Morte fuâ; magnò reparans, quod clade maligna
Tartara perdiderant facili, nec perdere cessant,
Oblatum quoties fpernit gens impia Amorem.
Nec veftram imminuet Naturam Humana. Supremo
Quum par Ipfe Deo, foliique potitus eisdem
Deliciis, alti dulciffima linquere regni
Gaudia digneris, peritura ut fæcla ruinâ

Eripias; quum jam ipse minùs natalibus altis,
Quàm Meritis, manifefta DEI indubitataque Proles
Emineas, ingenfque effufo cedat Amori

Gloria; (namque alias longè Clementia laudes
Exfuperat) tecum unà Humanam ad fidera cœli
Naturam attolles, foliique in parte locabis.

Receive new life. So Man, as is most just,
Shall fatisfic for Man, be judg'd, and die;
And dying rise, and rifing with Him raise
His Brethren, ranfom'd with His own dear life.
So Heav'nly love fhall outdo Hellish hate,
Giving to death, and dying to redeem,
So dearly to redeem what Hellish hate
So eafily destroy'd, and still destroys

In those who, when they may, accept not grace.
Nor fhalt Thou by descending to affume

Man's Nature, leffen or degrade Thine own.
Because Thou haft (tho' Thron'd in highest bliss
Equal to GOD, and equally enjoying
God-like fruition) quitted all, to fave
A world from utter lofs, and haft been found
By merit more than Birthright Son of GoD:
Found worthieft to be fo by being Good,
Far more than Great, or high; because in Thee
Love hath abounded more than Glory abounds;
Therefore Thy Humiliation fhall exalt

Hic carnis velo circumdatus, hìc DEUS idem,

Idem Homo, mista DEI Proles Hominifque, fedebis
Regnator, fanctâque palam perfufus Olivâ.

En! tibi do regnum immortale: Age, fume coronam
Quæfitam Meritis: Dominum Te celfa potentem
Imperia, augustæque Arces, Te Sceptra fuprema
Accipient; flexoque pavebit poplite, cœlum
Qui celebrat terrasque, imique Habitator Averni.
Cum fublimis ovans, clarâ comitante Catervâ,

Ibis

per nubes latè, auguftumque Tribunal
Siderei proceres refono clangore tubarum
Indicent, veniesque polo quæfitor ab alto,
Omnibus extemplò à ventis mortalia fæcla
Accedent, Vivi, tumulisque Cadavera ruptis;
Sic longum excutiet cantu cava Buccina fomnum.
Deinde tuis cinctus Divis Hominumque rebelles
Calicolumque malorum acies in jura vocabis:
Illos confcius horror aget, fugientque retrorfum

With Thee Thy Manhood also to this Throne:
Here fhalt Thou fit incarnate, here fhalt reign
Both GOD and MAN, SON both of GOD and MAN,
Anointed Univerfal King. All Pow'r

I give Thee; reign for ever, and affume
Thy Merits under Thee as Head Supreme
Thrones, Princedoms, Pow'rs, Dominions I reduce:
All knees to Thee fhall bow, of them that 'bide
In Heav'n, or Earth, or under Earth in Hell.

When Thou attended glorioufly from Heav'n
Shalt in the Sky appear, and from Thee fend
The fummoning Arch-Angels to proclaim
Thy dread Tribunal: forthwith from all Winds
The living, and forthwith the cited dead
Of all past Ages, to the general Doom
Shall haften: fuch a Peal fhall rouse their sleep.
Then, all thy Saints affembled, thou shalt judge
Bad men, and Angels; they arraign'd shall sink

Præci

Præcipites; claudent faturatas Tartara fauces.
Ardentem interea rapient Incendia Mundum,
Unde nova emerget Tellus Colique, piorum
Agmina quos celebrent; pulfis ibi nubibus aureos
Ire dies multâ ornatos virtute videbunt,
Gaudia quà dulces agitabunt pura triumphos,
Ingenuufque Amor & diffufo lumine Verum.
Regia tum demum depones fceptra: quid ultra
Sceptra valent? Erit ipfe DEUS, DEUS Omnia folus.
At colite Hunc, Divûm fancta agmina; noscite flexis
Hunc genubus, qui morte obitâ miracula præstat
Talia; quafque Patri, Nato perfolvite laudes.

Hæc adeò Omnipotens: fimul infremuere frequentes
Calicolæ altifonum latè dant Agmina plaufum,
Innumeras fonitu voces cantuque beato

Æthereos confeffa choros: Cœlum omne repletur
Lætitiâ, æternæque Arces clangore refultant.
Jamque omnes flexo folium venerantur utrumque

[dwell;

Beneath Thy Sentence; Hell (her numbers full)
Thenceforth fhall be for ever fhut. Mean while
The World fhall burn, and from her afhes fpring
New Heav'n and Earth, wherein the juft fhall
And after all their tribulations long
See golden days, fruitful of golden deeds,
With Joy and Love triumphing, and fair Truth.
Then Thou Thy regal Sceptre shall lay by,
For regal Sceptre then no more shall need;

GOD fhall be All in All. But all ye Gods,
Adore Him, who to compafs all this dies;
Adore the Sox, and honour Him as Me.

No fooner had th' Almighty ceas'd, but all
The multitude of Angels with a shout
(Loud, as from numbers without number, fweet,
As from bleft voices) utt'ring joy; Heav'n rung
With Jubilee, and loud Hofanna's fill'd

Th' eternal Regions. Lowly reverent

Poplite,
