Embellished with a beautiful Perfpective View of POPE'S HOUSE at TWICKENHAM and the remains of FINCHALE PRIORY, co. DURHAM. very fatisfactorily defcribed, vol. LXII. pp. 725, 799; and which your animated Correfpondent the Architect informs us, p. 928, has lately been demolished; will always be deemed of claffical importance. In vol. LXI. pp. 624, 988, you have quoted Mr. Ironfide's brief defcription of the Houfe and added the hiftory of the beautiful Willow. Thefe feveral particulars will be farther illuftrated, by inferting the Plate accompanying this letter, which is copied, by permiffion, from Mr. Ironfide's" Hiftory of Twickenham." A LONDON ANTIQUARY. LETTER XLVI. ON PRISONS. Hoc opus, hic labor eft *. VIRG. WELL recollect a converfation I plan must be obvious; and, independently of this humane and judicious provifion, fome recommendation a miferable fellow-creature, where it could with propriety be done, ought to accompany his difcharge, in order to afford him the means of acquiring further fupport ‡. This is ftill more neceffary as it refpects the Female Sex, whofe labour is chiefly within doors, and with whom character is the only paffport of admiffion into a family. To elucidate this fubject by examples which I cannot but painfully recollect, and the more fo when I know that means might be applied to leffen vice and nifery, and to promote morals and happinefs, I am induced to mention a circumftance which recently led me to vifit Newgate. A young woman of decent family, who had been charged with one of thofe fmaller offences to which the Law fubjects the delinquent to tranfportation, had this fentence I once had with the celebrated How- paffed upon her. The profecutrix, little expecting fo fevere a punishment, relented, and pleaded for a mitigation of it: it was, however, in vain. Her friends, to whom I am fill perfonally unknown, requefied by letter my interference in her favour; which occafioned this vifit to Newgate, where fhe had been confined about three months. I found her neither depraved by vice, nor vitiated by example. The humane Newman, as well as the worthy Head Turnkey, gave me the most favourable relation of her moral behaviour during this period, which encouraged me to state this fact, with other circumstances which I thought might plead in mitigation of her fentence, in an addrefs to the Secretary of State. Confinement in crowded rooms. with anxiety of mind, brought on a dangerous fever, for which my attendance was requested. In three rooms on the female felon fide, upwards of The defcent into hell is eafy, but to recall your steps, and re-afcend to the upper fkies, forms the difficulty and the labour. + See his excellent Introduction to, the State of Prifons, 4to, 1777.
