Its youth and its charms for the boy; With rapture all nature he view'd, For nature he knew to enjoy. But chiefly his country could charm: He felt 'twas a generous heatWith drums and the trumpet's alarm His pulfes in confonance beat. Ye heroes, to whom he was dear, 'Come weep o'er this forrowful urn, • Come ease the full heart with a tear; My hero will never return: He died in the dawn of applaufe, His country demanded his breath; Go, heroes, defend the fame cause, Avenge with your country his death.'

The virgin, in forrow more fair; In tears her blue eyes, and her locks Of auburn flew loofe on the air. I heard, as I pafs'd down the stream; The guards of the foe were in view: To enterprize fir'd by the theme, I bade the sweet mourner adieu.

HOME:-An Extemporary Effufion on returning Home, after an absence of fame weeks.

W

WHEN business calls, or friends invite me,

And I am forc'd abroad to roam,

No objects that I meet delight me
Like thofe which I have left at HOME.

Tho' fure to find luxuricus dainties,

And lodge beneath fome fplendid dome;
Still, ftill my forrowful complaint is,
That I am far, alas! from HOME.
Tho' welcom'd with unfeign'd careffes,
And liking ali, nay loving fome;
Much, much I fear my look expreffes,

That spite of all, I'm not at HoME.
What tho' my friends, the hours to vary,
For me felect the curious tome!
Of verfe and profe I foon grow weary,
Not Pope amufes while from HOME.
What tho' to urge my ftay's exerted
The eloquence of Greece and Rome ?
My steady purpose, not diverted,
Still refolutely leads me HOME.

Ye tranquil gates! again receive me,
Once more your truant wanderer's come;
From future calls kind fate relieve me,
And ne'er again I'll quit my HOME.

FOREIGN DEPARTMENT.

ROME, Nov. 5. 7E have accounts from Naples which confirm the fad tidings from Calabria of further damage having been done by earthquakes in that unfortunate province: the towns of Mileto and Monte Leone in particular, have fuffered very much, and the fhocks have been felt at Meffina.

London, Dec. 10. The prince bishop of Liege is faid to have put the prefs under fome very galling reftrictions. Every bookfeller is to give an account of his stock in trade when called on no package of books im

ported is to be opened, but in the prefence of an inspector, who has full power to destroy whatever he conceives to be dangerous: no man is to exercise the trade of a bookfeller without a licence from the vicar-general; and every printer and bookfeller is to take an oath not to print, fell, or keep in his cuftody any thing not approved of by the vicar-general, or his commiffaries.

The accounts published of the difcovery made by a Maley fhip with refpect to the fate of the Cato, commanded by Admiral Sir Hyde Par

ker,

ker, are not to be depended on. Other accounts state, that it was a French frigate, Le Caton, that was wrecked upon the Malabar coaft.

A few days ago, Peter Wilkins, the muffin man, who had been hanged in America, by order of General Green, during the late war, but was immediately restored to life by a French furgeon, died at his lodgings in Petty-France, where he has refided fome years. He had amaffed 1300l. the whole of which he left to his wife, a black woman. His pe nury was such, that he fcarcely afforded himself the common neceffaries of life; nor even would he, upon his death-bed, employ an apothecary, left he fhould charge for his vifit, or order a prefcription.

By the late valuable improvement of erecting a fignal staff on the new pier at Aberdeen, veffels can at all times, day or night, know with cer

tainty how to take the harbour. Its good effects were felt almost imme diately upon its erection. Several veffels from the fouthward got fafe in by direction of the light, who would otherwise have been obliged to run for the Malay Frith.

Naffau,(New-Providence,)Dec.6. Thofe interested in the welfare of thefe iflands, will be pleafed to learn, that the price of cotton is ftill kept up. The fudden rife is generally attributed to fpeculation. When the accounts of the infurrection in Hifpaniola are received, it will be at leaft probable, that the price of our ftaple will continue at two fhillings, or perhaps rife ftill higher.

Jan. 20. The accounts from the islands to windward, continue favourable. Early in next month, it is fuppofed, the cotton picking will be very general throughout the Bahama's.

DOMESTIC OCCURRENCES.

PORTLAND, January 19.. [R. Jonathan Illey, an inhabitant of Falmouth, a perfon between forty and fifty years of age, was feized with a fit of melancholy, which gradually increafed until it produced a total fufpenfion of fpeech, and almost entirely the neceffary action of the body for the execution of thofe offices which are effential to the prefervation of life. In this torpid ftate of body, he has continued more than four years, until within a few days paft, when the organs of fpeech inflantaneously, and voluntarily affumed their wanted tone, even to a degree of vo. Jubility furprising to those who beheld him. The restoration of vigor to the limbs, was more gradual, and not as yet perfectly restored. His family, at fo unexpected and almoft miraculous a change, ftood mute with

aftonishment, but fuppreffed the external marks of it as much as poffible, to prevent a relapfe, which they were apprehenfive of from the weak state of body he was then in. What is moft extraordinary, Mr. Illey has a perfect remembrance of the most minute circumftances that occurred during the above mentioned period; and his mind has been continually em ployed in making curious calculations in arithmetic, in forming extenfive ideas of building, architecture, &c.-He is now in this town, and we hope will foon recover so far as to refume his former occupation.

Bofton, Jan. 21. The fuperiority of workmanship of the carvers of Philadelphia, has been afferted in all the prints of that city: but, we believe, the world, on examining the beautiful head of the fhip Columbia, which lately failed from this port for

Europe,

Europe, will at leaft, give Bofton an equal share of applaufe with her fifter. The figure is America in an erect pofture; which for delincation and expreffion of feature, fymmetry of parts, and elegance of ornaments, has been pronounced by judges, a chef de ouvre in the art of carving; and does much credit to Meff. Skillings, the artists who defigned and executed it. New-London, Feb. 16. A plan for inftituting a bank in this town was issued last week, which has met the approbation of the citizens. Three hundred and fifty fhares were referved for this town, and three hundred and fifty for Norwich. The fubfcription for New-London was filled in a few hours.

New-Haven, February 1. Sunday morning laft, about two o'clock, the Printing-Office in Middleton, was destroyed by fire, and fearce an article therein faved, the flames having got to a great head before difcovered. Col. Philips's dwelling houfe, fituated within a few feet of the office, was greatly expofed, but by the spirited exertions of the citizens, was happily preferved. By what accident this difafterous event took place, we do not learn.

Danbury, Feb. 6. The following melancholy accident happened in Frederick's-Town, ftate of New York, on Tuesday laft:-Mr. Delavan, an amiable young gentleman, was teaching a school in his own house, and about two o'clock, P. M. while hearing the recitation of two fcholars who stood by him before the fire, the chimney fuddenly fell, and buried Mr. Delavan and the two children in its ruins, and went with fuch force across the room as to burst out the oppofite fide of the house. There were twelve children in the room, not one of whom efcaped unhurt. Mr. Delavan and the two lads were taken out of the rubbish dead, and we learn that one of the others has

fince expired: two or three more were dangerously wounded.

evening laft the froft was fo fevere, Richmond, Jan. 27. On Tuesday that Madeira wine froze in decanters standing in closets, and antimonial and spirits of wine were alfo froze in the apothecaries shops in this city.

We learn, that on Thursday fe'nnight the ice was fo firm at Norfolk, that people paffed over to Portsmouth upon it.

Baltimore, Feb. 7. In the course of the year 1791, there arrived at the port of Baltimore as follows-68 Ships and Barques-159 Snows and Brigs-94 Schooners-45 Sloopsand 370 coafters-making in the whole 736 veffels, entered at the Cuftom-Houfe. There have been cleared out 387 for foreign ports, and 662 coafters, making in all 1049 veffels.

The tonnage employed 17,565 foreign-American 27,289-in all 44,854 tons, exclufive of the coaft

In the year 1764, the quantity of flour brought to this market, did not exceed 10,000 barrels.

Philadelphia, Jan. 31. A coalmine has been discovered on the Leheigh, in the county of Northampton, state of Pennfylvania. The coal yet found is fmall, but there is every reafon to believe, that, by fearching deeper, it will be found larger; the quality is good. If this natural advantage is improved, it will be a prodigious refource to this city, and cheapen the article of fuel, which now, from the labour of transporta tion, bears a high price. The Leheigh is a branch of the Delaware.

The

The Trenton falls being rendered navigable, the transportation of coal from this mine will be cheap and eaty. Late letters from Birmingham mention, that Mr. Taylor (who had his house and other property destroyed by the mob) and feveral other refpectable diffenters, were preparing

to embark for America in the courfe

of the present year. Mr. Taylor, alone, it is faid, is worth near 200, oool. fterling.

William Carmichael and William Short, Efqrs. are appointed commiffioners plenipotentiary, for negociating and concluding with any perfon or perfons duly authorized by his Catholic Majefty, a convention or treaty concerning the navigation of the river Miffifippi by the citizens of the United States.

Feb. 11. This afternoon about one o'clock, the Senate of the United States were alarmed by fire in a room of the federal building, contiguous to the one in which they fit. It was communicated through the bottom of an open ftove to the floor. On examination, it was found that not more than half an inch thicknefs of morter had been placed between the boards and the bottom of the stove. Elizabeth-Town, Feb. 8. A number of patriotic gentlemen, of this town and neighbourhood, have it in contemplation of establishing a company for the profecution of a valuable manufactory at Springfield, where local advantages give it the preference to most places in the state. The plan is maturing, and will foon be laid before the public.

Monday the 23d ult. the thermometer stood at ten degrees below o -a degree of cold feldom known in this latitude; being 44 degrees colder than juft to freeze.

New-York, Feb. 8. The ftate of Georgia having impeached the Hon. Henry Ofborne, Efq; for high crimes and misdemeanors, in his conduct at

the late election of a member of Congrefs, whereby Gen. Wayne was returned instead of Gen. Jackfon-the trial of faid impeachment has been had in the high court of that ftate, and the faid Ofborne found guilty. The following is the fubftance of the judgment pronounced against him.

ift. That the faid Henry Ofborne fhall be no longer one of the judges. of the fupreme court of the itate of Georgia, and that his name be ftruck off the lift of juftices in Camden county.

2d. That he fhall be incapable to hold any office of truft, honour, or profit, in this ftate, for 30 years.

3d. That his name fhall be ftruck off the roll of the attornies at law.

4th. That he shall pay the fum of 600 dollars, in fpecie, on or before the first Monday in June next, to defray the actual costs of this profecution, and that the recognizance of the faid Henry Ofborne and his fureties, remain of force until the faid fum be paid into the treafury, or his body furrendered to the fheriff of Richmond.county, in discharge of such fureties.

Feb. 17. It is faid that Mr. Cox of Bofton, who fome time fince went to Londonderry in Ireland, to build a bridge, and which he accomplished to the great fatisfaction of his employers, is now in London, where he has contracted to take down the celebrated monument erected in that city to commemorate the great fire in 1666; for which fervice he is to have, as is reported, 10,000l. The bafe of the monument is very small for its amazing height, which is 202 feet. It is a column of the dorick order, and has a winding ftair cafe, out fide, which begins in the middle and rifes to within 30 feet fhort of the top. For many years paft this column has been a terror to the citizens of London, as by fome failure in the construction, 100 feet or more
