VIII. The Doctrine of this high Mystery of Predeftination is to he handled with special Prudence and Caref, that Men attending the Will of God revealed in his Word, and yielding Obedience thereunto, may, from the Certainty of their effectual Vocation, be affured of their eternal Election t. The most wife, righteous, and gracious God, doth oftentimes leave for a Season his own Children to manifold Temptations, and the Corruptions of their own Hearts, to chastise them for their foriner Sins, or to dif cover unto them the hidden Strength of Corruption, and Deceitfuluefs of their Hearts, that they may be humbled t, and to raise them to a more close and conftaut Dependence for their Support upon himlelf, and to make them more watchful against all Future Occafions of Sin, and for fundry other juft and holy Ends u.

VI. As for thofe wicked and ungodly Men, whom God, as a righteous Judge, for former Sins, doth blind and harden w, from them he not only withholdeth his Grace, whereby they might have been inlighted in the'r Understandings, and wrought upon in their Hearts *; but fometimes also withdraweth the Gifts which they hady, and expofeth them to fuch Objects as their Corruption makes Occasion of Sin z: And withal, gives them over to their own Lufts, the Temptations of the World, and the Power of Satan a; whereby it comes to pass that they harden themfelves, even under thofe Means which God ufeth for the foftning of others b.
