I ftaid to write the following Letter.

To the Honourable-Efq; at Whites's.
Sir,

THE Son of a Nobleman fhould be

more diftinguish'd by the Merit of

his Actions than his Birth. Confider then, the innocent Creature, the intended Victim of your brutal Appetite, is equally dear to a virtuous Mother and induftrious Father, as your Sifter is to her noble Parents and to you. If these Reasons are not fufficient to prevent your Defign, let Intereft prevail. A Letter with a full Account of it, is fent to your Father. Make haft and prevent its falling into his Hands; and believe me, you will rejoice hereafter at this providential Difappointment, and acknowledge the Friendship of Your's, &c.

to open and read as follows.

Honourable Sir,

THE dear little Creature is come:

By the Direction of the Porter who brought the Letter, we foon got to the Place, where we found the deteftable Engine of Lewdnefs at Tea with the lovlieft Creature Iever beheld, whom therefore I fhall call Hebe. Frank told the old Procurefs I was a Juftice of must be her Portion. Peace, and that Bridewel and a Cart Hebe burst into Tears, but I bid her be of good Heart, and hearing her Story, wrote a Letter to her Miflrefs, a Habit-maker in Covent-Garden, reproving her for trusting fo much Beauty to fo vile a Wretch; I wrote alo to her Mother; then called a Coach, and charg'd the Coachman to deliver her into her Mitrefs's Hands. However this may create me Enemies in my own Sex, it will prove me a true Lover of the other.

Happiness, fo, to live well, is to tread the Path which leads to this, and to live ill, is to walk in that which brings to the other. The Way to everlasting Mifery is unfortunate, tho' ftrew'd with pinefs, fortunate and good, tho' beset Flowers; that ending in eternal Hap

with Thorns and Briars.

All things are upon a kind of Balance. The good or bad Fortune of several Conditions is foeven poised, that almoft Equal Proportions of both are to be fifts in imagining that each is happier, or more miferable, than his Neighbour. However that be, nothing can deftroy the Inequality deriv'd from the Ends of these two Ways. And it being fo very dreadful, is also so visible, that did Men act but as rational Creatures, they would mind the Way that leads to endlefs Happiness, and carefully fhun the other. Yet the Confideration of this double End has scarce any Influence on the Choice they make of a Way to walk in during Life. The Reafon of it seems to be this: They follow their Inclinations and Paffions, and take up with Maxims the Tendency of which they will not give themselves the trouble to examine.
