Gentleman's Magazine:

JULY, 1733.

A View of the Weekly DISPUTES and ESSAYS in this Month.

Weekly Miscellany, June 30. No. 29.

R Hooker informs us, that Mr. Oldmixon has lately, very lately, printed a Piece, which he gives a A way at his House in Southampton-Buildings,under the Title of a Reply to the groundless and unjust Reflections upon him in three Weekly Mifcellanies (See p. 117, 129, 143) but fo little to his Juftification that Mr Hooker thinks it deferves rather Banter than a ferious Anfwer.

Oxonienfis had charged him with being in Concert with Mr Ducket to impofe a Cheat on the World, by making Mr Smith Author of a Lye, in faying, that the fcandalous Expreffion concerning Mr Hampden, in the Hiftory of the Rebellion, was foifted in by the Editors.

The Reply fets forth, that fome Years before the Discovery was talked of, Mr Oldmixon, in the Preface to Clarendon and Whitlock compared, had charged that very Expreffion on the Author of the

is dead, and cannot deny it; Mr Smith, who impofed upon Mr Ducket.

It was expected that Mr O. would have reply'd to the Reafons offer'd in Support of the Genuineness of the Hiftory. (For which Mr Hooker fairly offers him a Page in his Paper, fince he pretends he is refus'd it in others.) But hold there; he is not to be catch'd by fuch a Youngster as Oxonienfis. He was engaged in a useful Work that will make wafte Paper of Clarendon and Echard, and which is now ready for the Prefs. And I cannot, fays Mr Hooker, but congratulate the World, upon the intended Publication of a zd Volume of his Hiftory; not inferior to be fure to the firft. As to Materials, Method, Style, Diction, Language, and Fidelity, the Hiftorical Talents of this Writer were never yet queftion'd by any of his Admirers, tho' the rest of the malicious World have denied him, at leaft, one neceffary Qualification. Ne quid falfi dicere audeat, ne quid veri non audeat. R. HOOKER. Extract from Mr Oldmixon's Anfwer to the foregoing Mifcellany, viz.

IS falfe that I was concern'd with

History, not on the Editors, therefore if p'T Mr Ducket in inventing the Story,

it was inferted by the Author, it could not be foifted in afterwards by the Editors" Cavillers may ftill object, that Mr Oldmixon, tho' he had formerly charged the Expreffion on the Author, did, notwithftanding, think fit fince to charge it or the Editors; and confequently that he might be concerned with Mr Ducket in inventing the pretended Evidence of Mr Smith, as thinking fuch a pofitive Teltimony would be more fatisfactory to the World than his own bare Affertion.

That there is a Cheat fomewhere is certain, because the Paffage is to be seen under the Hiftorian's own Hand. (See p. 146 G.) but where fhall we fix it? Why, it is likely to fail at laft upon one that

D

I was not known to Mr Ducket at the Time it was written to me in the Country, by a Person whofe Veracity Dr Oxonienfis knows and dares not obje&t to.

What could hinder my believing that Mr Ducket fpoke Truth, when the foifting in fuch fhocking and falfe Expressions to ferve the Caufe, was fo agreeable to the Character of all that were faid to be concerned in it? Mr Ducket's Letter, in which he offers to atteft it, remains with Mr Cox under the Royal Exchange.

He aims awkwardly at Raillery, in mifreprefenting my bringing a good Character of Mr Hampden, from Whitlock and Ludlow, that the Paffage was not genu
