BERKELEY.

The terrible accident of the 14th ult. will never be forgotten by the people of Berkeley. Mrs. Palairet was beloved by all, and her long residence at Wickselme only served to endear her more and more to her many friends and neighbours, rich and poor, as years passed away. Miss Gilbert Smith was almost a stranger, but her sad death, her friendship with Mrs. Palairet, and the accounts which have since come from many quarters respecting her former life and labour of love among God's poor, seem to make her, too, one of ourselves in her sleep of death. They were both lovely and pleasant in their lives and in their deaths they were not divided. We can only express a hope that such a fearful warning may have its due effect upon us all-the effect which God surely meant it to have in drawing us away from this present world to the nearer walk with God, the life that is hid with Christ in Him. The funeral was a beautiful and impressive service, in which the hope in Jesus of eternal happiness in the re-union of the future was much more prominent than the natural grief in the present, for the loss for a while of the dear friends who had fallen asleep. The profusion of beautiful flowers and the sorrow depicted on the faces of the immense crowd, gathered together to witness the ceremony, showed how much sympathy was universally felt for the relatives of both of those whom God had so suddenly taken to Himself, but especially for Captain Palairet of Wickselme.

The Report of Her Majesty's Inspector on the Fitzhardinge Day Schools is exceedingly good this year, and the Grant for 14 months, for the three Schools amounts to £276. os. 3d., viz., Boys,' £128. 128. 1d.: irls,' 106 os. 5d.; Infants,' £41. 7s. 9d.

The following is a portion of to be quoted in its entirety :

e Report, which is too long

Boys.-The Elementary work passes much better than it did A good deal of th Reading, though very fairly intelligent, shows carelessness. English passes fairly, but analysis should be better.

Girls.'-I am glad to report a remarkable improvement in the work of this department. A v high percentage-30 per cent. above that of last year-has een obtained for Elementary Subjects and most of the work is of really good quality. The Spelling and Arithmetic of the Third Standard and the Spelling of the Fourth and Fifth Stand... ds are very good. English and Needlework both deserve the Ligher Grant.

Infants. This small Schoo is in good and pleasent order. Miss Delve takes pains with her Gallery Teaching, and the Infants pass a very fair examination in Elementary Subjects. Needlework and singing are very fair.

We are obliged to postpone Her Majesty's Inspector's Report on Wick School, and the Diocesan Reports on the five Schools until next month.

There will be a Choral Festival in the Parish Church on the Ioth inst. The Choirs of Ly ney, Dursley, Stinchcombe, and Berkeley will make together a surpliced choir of about 130 voices, and Stone will also join unsurpliced. The Service will

be at 5.30 p.m., and the Sermon will be preached by the Rev. The Hon. A. F. Hanbury Tracy, Vicar of Knowle, Bristol.

The debt which still remained on the building account of St. Maurice, Newport, has been generously paid by Lord Fitzhardinge.

The Choral Festival in Gloucester Cathedral on June 10th, in which the Dursley Choir took part, passed off very satisfactorily. The Festival Service began at 3 o'clock, when the nave was completely filled by a large congregation, in addition to the combined Choirs, who numbered about 500. Our Choir will also take part in a similar Festival to be held in Berkeley Church.

Home Missions.-A Meeting in aid of the Additional Curates' Society was held in the Town Hall on Thursday June 26, when a very interesting address was given by the Rev. C. Corfe, one of the organizing Secretaries.
