ENGLISH STUDIES VOLUME VI 1925 Edited for The English Association BY F. S. BOAS and C. H. HERFORD OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS 1927 English Sutheran 8-9-29 W PREFACE HEN in the Preface to Volume V of The Year's Work the Editors expressed their regret that for the first time the Association's Annual appeared without the name of Sir Sidney Lee as an editor or a contributor, they did not anticipate that his death was so near at hand. It has fallen to Sir E. K. Chambers, who has now undertaken the Shakespeare section of this survey, to give expression to the sense of loss felt by scholars everywhere. In almost every section covered by The Year's Work 1925 was a period of great activity, and for the first time the survey has had to include the important contributions in the new Review of English Studies. The editors of academic journals, especially in the United States, who forward them immediately on publication, do much to facilitate the work. As usual, the Editors are indebted to officials of the Oxford University Press for the Index and for the compilation of statistics which show that in this volume 626 publications are noticed, of which 309 are books and 317 are articles.
