XIII. Of Sanctification, HEY who are effectually of God, even to them that believe on his name. c Jer. xiv. 9. Yet thou, O Lord, art in the midft of us, and we are called by thy name, leave us not. 2 Cor. vi. 18. And will be a Father anto you, and ye shall be my fons and daughters, faith the Lord Almighty. Rev.iii. 12. Him that overcometh, will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerufalem, new Jerufalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write him my new name. upon called and regenerated, hanew spirit created in them, are g Pfal. ciii. 13. Like as a father pitieth his children: fo the Lord pitieth them that fear him. h Prov. xiv. 26. In the fear of the Lord is ftrong confidence: and his children fhall have a place of refuge. Matth vi. 30. Wherefore if God fo clothe the grafs of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is caft into the oven, fhall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? v. 32. Bleffed be the God and Father of our Lord Jefus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy, hath begotten us again unto a lively are farther fanctified really and perfonally, through thẻ virtue of Chrift's death and refurrection a, by his word and Spirit dwelling in them: the dominion of the whole body of fin is deftroyed and the feveral lufts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified d and they more and more quickened and strengthened in all faving graces to the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord f. lively hope, by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift from the dead. v. 4. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, referved in heaven for you. Heb.i. 14. Are they not all ministering fpirits, fent forth to minifter for them who shall be heirs of falvation. 1.a 1 Cor. vi. 11. And fuch were fome of you: but ye are washed, but ye are fanctified, but ye are juftified in the name of the Lord Jefus, and by the Spirit of our God. Acts xx. 32. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are fanctified. Phil. iii. 10. That I may know him, and the power of his refurrection, and the fellowship of his fufferings, being made conformable unto his death. Rom. vi. 5. For if we have been planted together in the xenefs of his death we fhall be alfo in the likeness of his refurrection: v. 6. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of fin might be destroyed, that henceforth we fhould not ferve fin. John xvii. 17. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Eph. v. 26. That he might fanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. 2 Theff, ii. 13. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because II. This God hath from the beginning chofen you to falvation, through fancti fication of the Spirit, and belief of the truth. Rom. vi. 6. That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory, to be ftrengthened with might, by his Spirit in the inner man. v. 17. That Chrift may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye being rooted and grounded in love, v. 18. May be able to comprehend with all faints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; v. 19. And to know the love of Chrift, which paffeth know. ledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. f2 Cor. vii. 1. Having therefore these promifes, dearly beloved, let us Chap. XIII II. This fanctification is throughout in the whole man g; yet imperfect in this life, there abideth ftill fome remnants of corruption in every part b: whence arifeth a continual and irreconcileable war; the flesh lufting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh i. III. In which war, although the remaining corruption for a time may much prevail k, yet, through the continual fupply of ftrength from the fanctifying Spirit of Chrift, the regenerate part doth overcome 1: and fo the faints grow in grace m, perfecting holinefs in the fear of God n. And the very God of peace fanctify you wholly: and I pray God your whole fpirit and foul and body be preferved blamelefs unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift. hr John i. 10. If we fay that we have not finned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Rom. vii. 18. For I know, that in me, (that is, in my flefh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is prefent with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. v. 23. But we all with open face, beholding as in a glafs the glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 72 Cor. vii. 1, Having therefore thefe A CHA P. XIV. Of Saving Faith. THE grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the faving of their fouls a, is the work of 5 the Spirit of Chrift in their hearts b; and is ordinarily wrought by the miniftry of the word c: by which alfo, and by the administration of the facraments, and prayer, it is increased and strengthened d. II. By this faith, a Christian believeth to be true whatfoever is revealed in the word, for the authority of God himfelf fpeaking therein e; and acteth differently upon thefe promifes, dearly beloved, let I. a Heb. x. 39. But we are not b 2 Cor. iv. 13. We having the fame fpirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I fpoken: we alfo believe, and therefore fpeak. Eph. i. 17. That the God of our Lord Jefus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, in the knowledge of him: v. 18. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the faints, v. 19. And what is the exceeding greatnefs of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power. Eph. ii. 8. For by grace are ye faved, through faith; and that not of yourfelves it is the gift of God. c Rom. x. 14. How then fhall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how fhall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how fhall they hear that without a preacher? v. 17. So then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. I di Pet. ii. 2. As new born babes defire the fincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. Acts xx. 32. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are fanctified. Rom. iv. 11. And he received the fign of circumcifion, a feal of the righteoufnefs of the faith, which he had yet being uncircumcifed: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcifed; that righteoufnefs might be imputed unto them alfo. Luke xvii. 5. And the apoftles faid unto the Lord, Increase our faith. Rom. i. 16. For I am not ashamed of the gofpel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto falvation, to every one that believeth, to the Jew firft, and alfo to the Greek. v. 17. For therein is the righteoufnefs of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The juft fhall live by faith. II. e John iv. 42. And faid unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy faying: for we have heard him ourfelves, and know that L this that which each particular paffage thereof containeth ; yielding obedience to the commands f, trembling at the threatnings g, and embracing the promises of God for this life and that which is to come b. But the principal. acts of faving faith are, accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for juftification, fanctification, and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace i. III. This faith is different in degrees, weak or strong k; may be often and many ways affailed and weakened, but this is indeed the Chrift, the Saviour of the world. 1 Theff. ii. 13. For this caufe also thank we God without ceafing, because when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but (as it is in truth) the word of God, which effectually worketh alfo in you that believe. 1 John v. 10. He that believeth on the Son of God, hath the witness in himself he that believeth not God, hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. Acts xxiv. 14. But this I confefs unto thee, that after the way which they call herefy, fo worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and the prophets. fRom. xvi. 26. But now is made manifeft, and by the fcriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlafting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith. g If. lxvi. 2. For all thofe things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, faith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite fpirit, and trembleth at my word. h Heb. xi. 13. Thefe all died in faith, not having received the promifes, but having feen them afar off, and were perfuaded of them, and embraced them, and confeffed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 1 Tim. iv. 8. For bodily exercise profiteth little : but godlinefs is profitable unto all things, having promife of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. i John i. 12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Acts xvi. 31. And they faid, Believe on the Lord Jefus Chrift, and thou fhalt be faved, and thy house. Gal. ii. 20. I am crucified with Chrift: Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Chrift liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Acts xv. 11. But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jefus Chrift, we fhall be faved even as they. III. k Heb. v. 13. For every one that useth milk, is unfkilful in the word of righteoufnefs: for he is a babe. v. 14. But ftrong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even thofe who by reafon of ufe have their fenfes exercised to difcern both good and evil. Rom. iv. 19.
