The approached to the time of her delivery, the obtained from Mr More, by the interference, if not by the violence, of a perfon whom the employed, a letter declaring her to be his wife; - it was dated a twelvemonth back, and declared to be defigned only to impofe on her brother during her lying-in. Upon this letter fhe purfued him in the commiffary court in Edinburgh, and before the court of feffion, claiming to be his wife, and obtained a decreet in her favour. He appealed; and, after hearing the counfel fully, the Lord Chancellor moved, to reverse the interlocutors, and to find that the letter was not a declaration of marriage; which was agreed to.

From the London Gazette. By the Nemesis: Le Renard of Dunkirk, of 12 guns and 51 men, Luke Corwell commander, who is an Irifhman, but fays he is an American. There were fix ranfomers on board.

By the Defiance armed fhip: The Zeuze, belonging to Flushing, of 16 guns and 113 men; had been out only four days, and but three weeks off the flocks. She had one ranfomer on board, for 1100 guineas. The engagement lafted two hours. The lofs on board the Defiance was I killed and I wounded; on the enemy's part, 21 killed and 17 wounded.

Rear-Adm. Digby, commander in chief on the American ftation, writes to the Ad. miralty, May 7. that the fquadron under his command had taken twenty-fix ships from March 13. to May 7. Six of the number were loaded with flour, fome in ballaft, and the remainder with rum, fugar, &c.

DEATH S.

April 1781. In the East Indies, by the bursting of a musket, Capt. Albert Innes, fecond fon of Dr Robert Innes, physician in Haddington.

May 30. 1781. Mr Dick Smith, master of the tap-house, Vauxhall. The fingular oddity of this man's character may be worth relating: He had caused one part of his tap-room to be painted, reprefenting a country church and church-yard, with grave-stones, and the initial letters of fuch of his deceased friends as he deemed worthy to lie in the best ground, with a grave left open for himself to lie amongst them; those whom he deemed mean, pitiful fellows, were placed in the poor ground, at a distance. This man being thus familiarifed to death, took a formal leave of his friends about twelve o'clock on Thursday, though feemingly in good health; told them he should never fee them more, went up ftairs, and died in about half an hour after; and is now put into a coffin of a new conftruction, made of different forts of wood, and without nails, with a lock and two keys, which he had by him fince Christmas for that purpose.

land, First Lord of the Treafury, Lord Lieutenant and Cuftos Rotulorum of the north riding of Yorkshire, a Governor of the Charter-house, and a Vice-Prefident of the Lock hofpital, K. G. and F. R. S. The Marquis fucceeded Mr George Granville at First Lord of the Treasury, July 12. 1765, and was in administration till Aug. 2. 1766, when he refigned, and the Duke of Grafton was appointed, and held the place till Jan. 28, 1771, when Lord North came into the above office; and the Marquis fucceeded his Lordship on the 26th of March laft. His Lordship was born May 13. 1730, and fucceeded his father in 1750. In 1752 he mar ried the daughter of Thomas Bright, Efq; of Badfworth, Yorkshire, and has died without iffue. The title is extinct, but the familyeftate goes to Earl Fitzwilliam.

The influenza has been fo fatal in many parts of Kent, that whole families have been nearly exterminated, and one quite fo, viz. Mr Atwater, hufbandman at Bredhurst, about three miles from Chatham, was taken ill, and in a few days died. On the day he was to have been interred, his wife died; when his fon's wife, who went to affift at the funeral, was taken ill, and the fecond day died; her husband, Mr.Attwater's fon, died in the course of a day or two; as did the elder brother, and two of his children; fo that the family, there being no more children, is now extinct.

There are now living, in the county of Suffolk, five fisters, all widows, whose ages, together, amount to 410.

Trial of David Tyrie for High Treafon, At the affize at Winchester, on Saturday, Aug. 10. 1782. HE court was uncommonly crowded by ten in the morning. Mr Juftice Heath, the judge, came down about relve. A motion was made to put off e trial, on an affidavit of the prifoner, at four of his witneffes were not ready; it the court rejected the motion, thinkg he had fufficient time to be prepared, he had been taken up in February laft. Counsel for the crown, Mr Morris, Mr rjeant Grose, Mr Batt.

The indictment was laid for giving intelligence to the enemy of the fitting, failing, and deftination of his Majefty's fhips and fleet, and for hiring William James to convey the faid information to the French King and his subjects.

Maria Hervey, who keeps a school in Carvick's Row, Scotland Yard, was first fworn.
