PREFACE.

THE FOLLOWING SELECTION from Modern French Authors differs in some respects from the Extraits Choisis by the same compiler. The object in making it has been to provide, not only interesting tales, but also specimens of the critical talent for which the French are so remarkable. M. Sainte-Beuve and M. Taine are two of the most distinguished critics of the day, but their works are voluminous, and not adapted for indiscriminate reading; neither are they easy of access except for subscribers to foreign libraries. It is hoped, therefore, that specimens of the peculiar power of these writers may be more satisfactory to persons who really care for French literature, than a volume consisting only of tales.
