THE names of John Thornton, and of Henry, his son, are familiarly known as ranking among the most munificent of modern times. The latter is said to have expended about six-sevenths of his annual income, or £9000, upon works of charity and mercy, for several successive years. Amid this great liberality, it was his practice to keep as regular and as exact an account of all that he gave away, as he did in regard to his commercial transactions. Upon each page of the Register which he employed for that purpose some appropriate text was inscribed. He was liberal, but it was upon system. He was large-hearted, but it was not at the bidding of mere impulse or emotion. Now, one leading object of this little volume is to induce Christians to imitate the Thorntons, and not merely to give, but to give upon system--to contribute to the |
