I

TH

HYMN CLXIX.

HOU God of Harmony and Love,
WholeNametranfports the Saints above,
And lulls the ravifh'd Spheres;

On thee in feeble Strains I call,
And mix my humble Voice with all
The heav'nly Choristers.

2 If well I know the tuneful Art
To captivate an Human Heart,
The Glory, Lord, be thine:
A Servant of thy bleffed Will,
I here devote my utmost Skill
To found the Praise divine.

3 With Tubal's wretched Sons no more
I prostitute my sacred Pow'r,

To please the Fiends beneath;
Or modulate the wanton Lay,
Or fmooth with Mufic's Hand the Way
To everlasting Death.

Suffice for this the Seafon paft:
I come, great God, to learn at laft
The Leffen of thy Grace.

Teach me the new, the gofpel Song,

[ocr errors]
[blocks in formation]

And let my Hand, my Heart, my Tongue,
Move only to thy Praise.

5 Thine own Mufician, Lord, inspire,
And iet my confecrated Lyre
Repeat the Pfalmift's Part:
His Son and thine reveal in me,
And till with facred Melody
The Fibres of my Heart,

6. So fhall I charm the lift'ning Throng,
And draw the living Stones along,
By Jefu's tuneful Name:

The living Stones fhall dance, hall rife,
And form a City in the Skies,

The new Jerufalem,

7 O might I with thy Saints afpire,
The meanest of that dazzling Choir,
Who chaunt thy Praise above;
Mixt with the bright Musician-band,
May I an heav'nly Harper ftand
And fing the Song of Love,

8 What Extacy of Blifs is there.
While all th' angelic Concert fhare
And drink the floating Joys!
What more than Extacy, when all
Struck to the golden Pavement, fall
At Jefu's glorious Voice!

9 Jefus! the Heav'n of Heav'ns he is,
The Soul of Harmony and Blifs;
And while on him we gaze,

And while his glorious Voice we hear,

Our

Our Spirits are all Eye, all Ear,
And Silence fpeaks his Praife.

10 O might I die that Awe to prove,
That proftrate Awe which dares not move
Before the great Three-One;

To fhout by Turns the bursting Joy,
And all Eternity employ

In Songs around the Throne,

HYMN CLXX.

ISING to the Lord a new melodious fong;
Affift the choir, ye tribes of ev'ry tongue:
Wide as the worldhisfov'reignmercy reigns;
Wideasthe worldrefoundthe rapt'rousftrains;
Ye angels, join the joyful acclamation,
And fing the love, that brings to men falvation.
2 His gracious eye beheld in full furvey
Where Adam's race in mingled ruin lay:
No human aid the danger could avert;
Noangel's hand could footh the raging smart:
In his own breast divine compaffion rifes,
Andthe

grandschemethecourtofheav'nfurprises. 3 God's only Son with peerless glories bright, His father's faireft image and delight, Justice and grace the victim have decreed To wear our flesh, and in that flesh to bleed. Proftrate in duft, ye finners, all adore him, Andtremble, whileyour heartsrejoice beforehim.
