THE ELEVENTH VOLUME.

THE extensive circulation which this publication has maintained for several years, makes it now rather a superfluous task to expatiate on those merits which have obtained for it so much favour with the public. The Editor feels himself in a similar situation with the representative for many Parliaments of a certain borough, who on being asked by his constituents how he could have the assurance to solicit them so often for their suffrages, thus eloquently replied: Gentlemen, when it shall be deemed presumption in a child to look up for the continued protection of the parent whom it has never ceased to love and revere, or ingratitude in a faithful servant to seek to prolong his services to a generous master-then may such conduct as mine towards you be called assurance. As a public individual, I am but the child of your partiality, and live only to do you good service. You may cast me off if you please, but to be consistent you ought first to cast off those opinions and attachments, of which you made me the organ, and of which I have always been the firm and zealous advocate.' In the same spirit, the Editor of the MECHANICS' MAGAZINE may say to his numerous readers, It is your love of science which called this work into being, and has inspired those exertions that have enabled it to sustain so high a character for originality and usefulness through so many Volumes; its objects, and its modes of promoting these objects, are still the same as they ever have
