Zu den gleichnissen, die fräul. Kempe hier zusammenstellt, möchte ich gerne ein sehr bezeichnendes nachtragen, doch kann ich es leider augenblicklich nicht auffinden; wenn ich nicht irre, hat es aber etwa folgenden sinn: »>Sie schlugen so viele köpfe ab, dass sie umherflogen wie bälle, mit denen die knaben spielen< wenn nicht gar auf das fussballspiel angespielt wird!

So viel über und zu der arbeit von Dorothy Kempe. Und nun noch einige weitere mitteilungen über dieses Troybook, z. t. aber nur vorläufiger, nicht abschliessender art, nur um auch meinerseits auf dieses für die geschichte der Trojasage in England so wichtige gedicht die weitere Aufmerksamkeit zu lenken.

Zur zeit- und quellenfrage unseres gedichtes bringt die Hazlittsche neue ausgabe von Wartons litteraturgeschichte (1871) folgende neue bemerkung von Donaldson:

These [various English] versions [of the Trojan war] are independent translations from Guido, belong to the end of the

14. & beginning of the 15. century & must have been made within a period of 50 years. Probably the earliest was that by Barbour, then the Alliterative, then Lydgate's, & last of all, the Bodleian. Yet there is abundant evidence that L. had read the alliterative version, for many of his interpolations & renderings are the same as, or expansions of those given in that version; the same may be affirmed of the author of the Bodl. version. Indeed, it may be to the alliterative version that the author refers as the Romance that the sothe telles', phrase that occurs very frequently in the alliterative version. That the Bodl. Ms. is probably a popular rendering of the Alliterative, compare the passages given by Warton with those in the E. E. T.S. I. 12-15. All the passages from the Bodl. Ms. that I have compared, and they were many, show the same peculiarities; some of them are even more striking.

Benoît hat bekanntlich die form Faconites, z. b. 1134 und 1149 auf s. 39 bei Joly.
