PREFACE.

FOR a period of more than thirty years the Committee of the Sunday School Union have diligently sought to provide suitable periodical literature for Senior Scholars, and other youths and maidens growing up in life. With this end in view, the "BIBLE CLASS MAGAZINE" was originated in the year 1848, and after a long career of usefulness was succeeded by the "MORNING OF LIFE" in 1875.

Twelve months since, the following announcement was made:-"The circulation of 'THE MORNING OF LIFE' having largely increased during the year 1878, the Magazine will assume ampler dimensions, and take a new title, from the commencement of 1879. Its future name is indicative of what 'EXCELSIOR' is designed to become, a True Helper to Young Men and Women, and Youth of both sexes, in all onward and upward efforts, whether mental, moral, or spiritual."

It is hoped and believed that the promise thus made has been satisfactorily redeemed. "EXCELSIOR" has met with multiplied tokens of approval, and a large and encouraging circulation has already been attained. It is earnestly desired that its suitability and usefulness may be largely extended during the coming year, so that it may prove, both intellectually and morally, a lasting benefit to the important class for whose welfare it is being conducted.
