EDITORIAL NOTE

This edition of the "Golden Treasury" is intended for high-school students and for the general reader. We have tried to let the poems speak for themselves, adding only such notes of information as one class of our readers or another might find helpful. For the most part we have avoided æsthetic criticism; where all is so excellent, the reader cannot go wrong if he makes his own choices and discoveries. In preparing the notes we have consulted the available annotations, and wish to acknowledge much serviceable guidance, especially from the elaborate commentary by Mr. J. H. Fowler and Mr. W. Bell, published by the Macmillan Company, and from the edition by Mr. Herbert Bates, published by Longmans, Green, and Co. In the omission of all metrical and of most etymological questions, we have wished to make clear to teachers and students what seem to us the more important steps in the approach to poetry.
