La prima volta allora irato Adamo,

Quest' è l'amor, rispose, è questo il premio
Del mio ver te, Eva ingrata! che si saldo
Mostrai, quando eri tu, non io, perduta?
Chè io vivere e goder potea immortale
Ben, pur morir con te volente elessi;
E sono ora io tradotto qual cagione
Di tuo peccar? Nè assai severo io parvi
A tuo obbedir: che più fare io potea?
Io te avvisai, io te avvertii, predissi
Il rischio ed il nemico ascoso e al varco;
Oltre di ciò solo era a oprar la forza;
E forza a libertà qui ostar non debbe.
Ma spinse te fidanza allor sicura
O di non incontrar periglio, o il destro
Trovar di gloriose prove: e forse
Errai pur io, troppo ammirando quanto
Sembrò si in te perfetto, che io niun male

No evil durst attempt thee; but I rue

That error now, which is become my crime,
And thou the accuser. Thus it shall befal
Him, who, to worth in women overtrusting,
Lets her will rule: restraint she will not brook,
And, left to herself, if evil thence ensue,
She first his weak indulgence will accuse. »

Thus they in mutual accusation spent
The fruitless hours, but neither self-condemning;
And of their vain contest appeared no end.

Credei si forte a te toccar; ma piango
Or quell' error, che fatto è mio delitto,

BOOK THE TENTH

THE ARGUMENT.

Man's transgression known, the guardian-angels forsake paradise, and return up to heaven to approve their vigilance, and are approved, God declaring that the entrance of Satan could not be by them prevented. He sends his Son to judge the transgressors; who descends and gives sentence accordingly; then in pity clothes them both, and reascends. Sin and Death, sitting till then at the gates of hell, by wondrous sympaty feeling the success of Satan in this new world, and the sin by man there committed, resolve to sit no longer confined in hell, but to follow Satan, their sire, up to the place of man to make the way easier from hell to this world to and fro, they pave a broad highway or bridge over chaos, according to the track that Satan first made; then, preparing for earth, they meet him, proud of his success, returning to hell: their mutual gratulation. Satan arrives at Pandemonium; in full assembly relates, with boasting, bis success against man; instead of applause, is entertained with a general hiss by all his audience, trasformed with himself also suddenly into serpents, according to his doom given in paradise; then, deluded with a shew of the forbidden tree springing up before them, they, greedily reaching to take of the fruit, chew dust and bitter ashes. The proceedings of Sin and Death; God foretels the final victory of his Son over them, and the renewing of all things; but, for the present, commands his apgels to make several alterations in the heavens and elements. Adam, more and more perceiving his fallen condition, heavily bewails, rejects the condolement of Eve; she persists, and at length appeases him: then, to evade the curse likely to fall on their offspring, proposes to Adam violent ways, which he approves not; but, conceiving better hope, puts her in mind of the late promise made them, that her seed should be revenged on the serpent; and exhorts her with him to seek peace of the offended Deity, by repentance and supplication.

ARGOMENTO.

Conosciuto il fallo dell' Uomo gli angeli custodi lasciano il paradiso e tornano su al cielo a giustificare la loro vigilanza e sono giustificati, dichiarando Iddio che l'ingresso di Satano non potea esser prevenuto da loro. Egli manda il suo Figlio a giudicare i rei; egli scende e dà sentenza giusta il merito; quindi pietoso li veste amendue e riascende. Colpa e Morte sedute fino allora alle porte d'inferno per maravigliosa simpatia sentendo il buon successo di Satano in questo nuovo mondo ed il fallo commessovi dall' uomo, risolvono di non restar più a lungo nell'inferno, ma di seguir Satano loro padre verso la dimora dell'uomo. A rendere la via più facile da inferno a questo mondo di quà e di là, esse costruiscono un ampia strada o ponte sopra il caos, dietro alle prime tracce di Satano. Quindi volgendosi alla terra, lo incontrano che altero del suo successo tornava all'inferno: loro mutue congratulazioni. Satano al Pandemonio; narra con boria in piena assemblea il suo successo contro l'uomo; invece di applauso è accolto con un generale sibilo di tutti i suoi uditori trasformati improvvisamente con esso lui ancora in serpenti giusta la sua condanna pronunciata in paradiso; quindi ingannati da una selva di alberi vietati nati loro innanzi, essi giugnendo avidamente a prendere del frutto, masticano polveri e ceneri amare. Operazioni di Colpa e di Morte; Dio predice la vittoria finale del suo Figliuolo sopra di esse e il rinnovamento di ogni cosa, ma intanto comanda agli angeli suoi di fare diverse mutazioni ne' cieli e negli elementi. Adamo scorgendo sempre più la sua caduta sorte piange amaramente e respinge i conforti di Eva: ella persiste e alfine lo calma; quindi a cansare la maledizione che dovea cadere del pari sulla loro prole, propone ad Adamo violenti mezzi, che egli disapprova; ma concependo migliore speranza le ricorda la promessa fatta loro sull' ultimo, che il suo seme torrebbe vendetta sul serpe ; e la esorta a cercare con lui di placare la offesa Divinità col pentimento e colla preghiera.
