Obtutu tacito procul omnipotentia gefta

Teftatus, chorus ibat ovans: unà agmine claro

Procedunt, vario fplendentes ordine, lætisque

Umbrati palmis; & Jo super aftra Triumphe

Ingeminant; fimul Hunc Natum Hæredemque fupremum,
Victorem, Dominumque, fonant; ipsum omnibus unum
Donatum fceptris, fceptris dignum omnibus unum.

Ille inter refonos cœli per aperta triumphos

Præfigni invehitur pompâ Genitoris ad alta

Atria, fulgentefque domos: nunc, arce receptum
Sidereâ, patrii illuftrant Confortia regni,

Et beat æternæ vicinia lucida Dextræ.

Hæc adeò, ut monitus caveas, (haud prodita genti
Lege aliâ humanæ) facilis tibi rite revolvi
Omnia, terrenis fimulans cæleftia geftis ;
Congreffas Superorum acies, pugnataque volgo
Bella per æthereos campos, vaftamque ruinam
Audentum Satane aufpiciis nimis ardua Divûm.

To meet Him all his Saints, who filent stood
Eye-witneffes of his Almighty Acts,
With Jubilee advanc'd; and as they went,
Shaded with branching Palm, each Order bright
Sung Triumph, and Him fung Victorious King,
SON, Heir, and Lord, to Him Dominion giv'n,
Worthieft to Reign. He celebrated rode
Triumphant through mid Heav'n, into the Courts,
And Temple of his Mighty Father thron'd
On high; who into Glory Him receiv'd,

Where now He fits at the right hand of bliss.
Thus measuring things in Heav'n by things on
Earth,

At thy requeft, and that thou may'ft beware
By what is past, to thee I have reveal'd
What might have else to human Race been hid;
The difcord which befel, and War in Heav'n
Among th' Angelic Pow'rs, and the deep fall
Of those too high afpiring, who rebell'd
With Satan: He, who envies now thy state;

Invidus

Invidus Ille Tuî jam nunc tibi cordis honestam
Orditur mutare fidem; fortifque beatæ

Deliciis fimul exutum meditatur eafdem
Te fecum in pœnas trahere, æternofque dolores.
Hæc fibi pollicitus mœstæ folatia cladis,
Si modo vindictâ tandem implacabile pectus
Sic valeat fatiare, DEUмque laceffere, dum Te
Participem cafûs laqueis involvet iniquis.

Tu fraudi ne cede, fed obftrue fortiter aures;
Hifque tuæ Confortem animæ invalidumque moneto
Dimidium. Exemplo profit didiciffe tremendo
Præmia quæ data perverfis: Illi impete firmo
Se poterant tenuiffe; amens tamen obruit Error.
Sis memor, & fancto serves mandata pavore.

Who now is plotting how he may feduce
Thee also from Obedience; that with Him
Bereav'd of happiness thou may'ft partake
His punishment, Eternal misery:
Which would be all his folace and revenge,
As a despite done against the Moft High,

[blocks in formation]

Thee once to gain Companion of his woe.
But liften not to his Temptations: warn
Thy weaker let it profit thee to have heard
By terrible Example the reward

Of Difobedience: firm they might have stood,
Yet fell. Remember, and fear to tranfgrefs.

FINIS LIBRI SEXTI.
